This feels surreal. I still can’t believe it’s all over.
I’m waiting for all the theorists (especially Red Hen, whom I worship) to start posting about being right and/or wrong. Hasn’t happened yet, though I guess 36+ hours isn’t long enough.
This post will mainly be about my (and others’) predictions and theories. I’ll post my actual review of the book...eventually, after I get a chance to re-read it.
My three biggest predictions in order of most to least certain: Snape was good. Harry(’s scar) was a Horcrux. Harry was going to die.
Snape was good. And Harry was a Horcrux. I was incredibly pleased. Even though I started believing these two mostly because of Red Hen. BTW, Mossy, I like how you jumped in with the not!evol!Snape and Horcrux!Harry believers just in time. :P I want to see FH’s reaction to good!Snape.
Harry...did not quite die. Mostly dead, not dead dead. Darn. Oh well, two and a bit out of three ain’t bad.
Snape loved Lily? I honestly did not expect this. I’d read it in fics, but never did I actually think JKR would go there. (Same thing with Ron/Lavender in HBP.) It was just sort of like...BAM! And fanon became canon, and it was strange.
The locket was a Horcrux, though I was really bored by the trio taking forever to figure out this and RAB. When the diadem of Ravenclaw was mentioned to be a tiara I thought it'd be Great-Auntie Muriel's (the one Fleur wore). Awesome that JKR sneaked it into a previous book.
I didn't think Nagini was a Horcrux; I just thought JKR had Dumbledore say it to bring up the possibility of using living things as Horcruxes. (Actually, I was a big fan of the theory that Nagini wasn't a Horcrux and that Dumbledore didn't actually think she was. Dumbledore implied that Nagini was a Horcrux without ever saying it outright, I think. But anyway.) Boo on there actually being 8 soul!fragments.
Red Hen had predicted a “spirit quest” of Harry in the not!living world, which I didn’t quite support. But that turned out to be closer than I expected.
I did think Hogwarts would re-open, so yay there. Didn't expect the propaganda thing though.
Hermione/Ron and Harry/Ginny. What a surprise!
On the theory of 5=1 6=2, 7=3 (the 2nd Guessing theory):
Red Hen, making DH predictions, had written something like “Just for fun, let’s bring back the Shrieking Shack for the final confrontation.” And I was shocked that this turned out to be partly correct. I was expecting the Veil, or at least the Department of Mysteries. Although Hogwarts would have been my next guess, because 1) POA ended like that, and 2) the whole series started with Harry going there.
(Good!Snape also fits into 2ndGuess. Sirius was first introduced in POA as a vampire-looking enemy, Voldemort’s right-hand man, the one who betrayed the Potters to Voldemort, etc.. Eventually Harry hated him as much as he hated Voldemort. And Sirius turned out to be good after all.)
Other 7=3 echoes: Stan Shunpike got a mention. Dementors were floating around. Patronuses (Patroni?) were vaguely important and mentioned fairly often. Harry lost a very important magical wooden item (but this turned out okay in the end). The Trio learned of and used a secret passageway connecting Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. The heroes ride on a magical flying creature. Someone fakes a death which is publicised and believed by many people. Hogwarts is closely guarded by nasty things. Someone on the run uses another’s name as an alias. Harry had flashbacks to Voldemort killing his parents. The trio eavesdrop. Quidditch is a theme throughout.
There's most likely some more stuff, but I really need to re-read DH and POA first. Admittedly, 7 didn’t echo 3 as much as 6 echoed 2. And neither came close to how 5=1.
I'll stop now. Probably missed some stuff, but what the heck.
