It's silly of me to feel so wronged for being told off for wearing a hat at work -for fuck's sake, there are far, far more massive problems in the world- but if there's one thing I object to, it's being made to follow rules that are absolutely pointless, and I do, in fact, have a strong opposition to imposing one's standards on other people when whether or not they are following them changes nothing.
If what I am wearing is in any way preventing anyone from doing their job effectively, or compromising safety, or is reasonably offending someone, then by all means, ask me to stop. I am happy to adhere to your standards, office- Right up to the point when it gets stupid.
It got stupid the moment I learned that it's fine to wear old jeans, gypsy skirts, flip-flops, beat-up sneakers (or no shoes at all), earrings shaped like robots or monkeys throwing fruit, hoodies, band tee-shirts, short skirts, low-cut dresses, and tights with holes in them, but not a fedora, because somehow that violates the company's policy of 'conservative dress.'
I'm not going to quit over this, but I've long thought that I was unsuited to office work -And having worked in an office, I've learned that I was very, very right about that- but since I'm only temping until July anyway, this has inspired me to start my search for a new job a bit sooner than I'd planned.
