Apparently, the entire restaurant is taking me out to a bar on my 21st birthday coming up. About two weeks ago, it happens to come up in conversation and one of my managers decided a few of us would go to a nearby bar. Turns out today that "a few of us" means "just about all of us".
It's kind of flattering but two things:
1. I hate, loathe, and dispise crowds, in that order
2. I don't drink, not even champagne at my cousin's wedding
Hopefully, things won't be too weird. But, the most suprising thing to me is the fact that so many people would want to celebrate my birthday. I wasn't even aware that I was that well-liked as to warrant a gathering like that. I'm currently operating under the impression that half of these people just want to go because they are underage and they can get in. Not to put myself down or anything, but I'm just not that popular.
In other news my cousin got married over the weekend, we were up in Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. My brother and I had a problem with this "nature" substance that seemed to be corrupting the place. Our sinuses longed for someone to drop some Agent Orange.
In all honesty, the actual wedding was sort of my least favorite part of the weekend, the two days previous had been a great time getting together with family and relaxing. But I was an usher in the wedding and so I had to get all fancied up in a hot, uncomfortable tuxedo and stick around for the approximately 20 billion pictures taken afterwards. I hope that if I ever get married, I'll be able to convice her to take a much simplified approach to the whole thing. I'm not talking drive-thru chapel in vegas simple, but definately not some big old church affair in which everyone in the known universe is invited and perhaps more. But then again, I'm just the guy, what do I know about weddings.
Anyway, I got home on Sunday in the early afternoon, thinking I'd have the rest of the day off (I'd requested Thursday - Sunday off of work) but through some very poor planning I had been put on the schedule for the evening shift. I put in a movie and as I'm just laying down to relax, I get the call. On top of that, when I get there, the air conditioning is broken and it is sweltering inside. I hate working night shifts, I hate working weekends, and the worst of all is weekend nights, when everything goes by so slowly and you just want to be anywhere but inside a restaurant full of braty children and self-righteous adults. And of course the fact that when I left, I would have to come right back less than 12 hours later didn't help my attitude any. It took me a day or two of relaxing after work to get back into a normal path of things, but now I'm good.
I saw They Might Be Giants on Conan last night, which was good. I saw them a few weeks ago live at the Skyline Stage at Navy Pier. I managed to get genuine front row center seats from a scalper for
slightly less than face value.
He was selling them for $25 apiece which is more than the price of an individual ticket ($23.50) but because of the service charge (4.50) the price for an individual ticket would be higher. Since he bought a large block of tickets and since the service charge is only charged once per customer, he was selling for more than he paid for them, and I got them for less than I would have at the box office, an amicable exhange all around.
In the end, seating didn't matter since they called everyone up to fill the 8 foot deep area between the first row of seats and the stage, but because of where I was sitting I managed to get right up next to the stage. It was a fantastic show, as it always is, and I was able to get a few autographs, one on the ticket stub, and one on the bill of a hat. I hope to catch them again when they come back in October for this performance-arts thingie they're participating in.
Etc.
