I'm actually giving out Harry Potter fanfiction recs. Wow, how did I reach this point?
Um...this list actually won't be very long, because I can't think of any at the moment, and some of them are those things that you read and think are really amazing, and then go back and look, and it was really awful and you wonder why you even bothered spending thirty hours reading 100 chapters. Anyway, I'll try to weed those out. So if you see something on this list, you have my guarantee that it's kick-ass.
Ahem. To begin:
The Shoebox Project (S/R J/L, Marauder era). It's absolutely phenomenal. Please read. A person who has never read Shoebox has never lived. And you think I'm joking... It's basically the Wolfstar (S/R) Bible. Remus collects various memorabilia in a shoebox, for posterity. But the story isn't only about what's in the shoebox.
Read Here The Prankster's Guide to Life (also S/R, also Marauder era). In the same vein as SBP. Cute, funny, and thoroughly random. The Marauders decide to write a guide to pranking, and interspersed throughout the actual text are the memories of each of them. Some sad, some sweet, and some very odd indeed. These are the Marauders, after all.
Read Here Promises Unbroken (J/L and other canon pairings, AU). First in a trilogy--it's the only one I'll list, cause you can all find the others. Written after GoF, so some canon details, like the characteristics of the Order of the Phoenix, aren't the same. But by the time you're into it, it's a whole new world--it doesn't matter. I really adore this. In short: Sirius remained the secret keeper, was kidnapped by Voldemort and disappeared, and the war isn't getting any better. It's good, because it doesn't do the "Lily and James live and they're all happy forever and--Voldemort, what Voldemort?" route, or the "Lily and James live, but Harry's a brat, so see how secretly fortunate their deaths were?" thing. The war is still going on, it's been going on for a while, and it's horrific, but in between the carnage and despair, there are these moments where everyone is happy anyway, and you think Lily and James deserved more time than they got. I'm a sucker for those. As evidenced by the above list.
Read Here Five Dead Women (no pairings, various eras). This is just a one-shot, unlike my others, but it's just as likely to make you stay up all night, rereading it, thinking about it...oh, it's so shivery and wonderful. I don't really know what it's about in a summary-type way. I guess...five dead women and a potions book, is the only way to describe it. It's short--it won't take long. And it's worth it. (oh, and the "dead women" isn't a graphic or scary thing, in case anyone was worried)
Read Here Second Thoughts (no pairings, Hogwarts era). Another one-shot that I added in just for kicks. Not much I can say about it without giving it away, except that it made me laugh, when I first read it. You'll just have to read it yourself and see!
Read Here After the End (H/G, R/Hr, post-Hogwarts). If SBP was the Wolfstar Bible, this is it for both the Good Ship (R/Hr) and Orange Crush (H/G). Written after GoF, but like "Promises Unbroken," the non-canon detail once in a while stops mattering. However, as this was written before Ginny had a major role and a fleshed out character, it's quite impressive how spot-on they get her. She doesn't like Quidditch, but I can get over that. The requisite Harry/Ginny angst and then fluff. And basically just melty Ron/Hermione fluff all the way. But if you think this is just going to be one big fluff-fest, you clearly haven't bargained on the interference of one Draco Malfoy... (ahh, cliffhanger! now you have to read!)
Read Here Seriously, folks. SBP and AtE are classics, famed throughout their respective ships. The others, of course, are equally brilliant.
Ah, I've gotta go, or I could be here all day, but I think these six should keep you a few days until I can scare up a list of more. (I am such a geek) But, alas, Core homework beckons...
PS: OH. MY. GOD. ALIAS. I would talk and talk about how FABULOUS the episode was, but I will just say one thing: it was exemplary. And I am exhausted (from all the squee-ing and anticipation and SQUEE).
