CHARACTER STUDY Name: Syaoran Series: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Medium: Manga Timeline: After Chapitre 90 Staffer or Con-goer? Con-goer
History/Background:
This history covers much of the reason why he was cloned and such. Beware of spoilers.
"Syaoran" is revealed to be the son of individuals also named "Sakura" and "Li Syaoran". He was sent to Yuuko, the space time witch, by his father because his mother had a prophetic dream of someone waiting for him. His mother pays as a price the 'star wand', in order to allow him to travel to Clow Country, and he then meets Princess Sakura there. He was told by Yuko he would only be able to remain there for seven days, and he couldn't touch her before he was transported back to his world: after that, Syaoran would have to make a choice.
Syaoran agreed and one night, Princess Sakura takes him up to the top of the castle to show him the stars. Her eyes suddenly go blank, and her body rises up in the air - she hears the sound of bells coming from the ruins. She warns him it's too dangerous, and to stay back; although Syaoran doesn't know what it could be that is dangerous.
Syaoran is aware that something bad is going to happen on the 7th day, and he has been granted permission to go to the cleansing grounds with Sakura on that day; in order to protect her. The cleansing grounds have permitted his presence, so he is able to enter - even though nobody else (not even the priest) is allowed in the 7th day.
During the seventh day, Syaoran enters the Ruins with Sakura, who seems to remember nothing of the previous night's vision. When inside the Ruins, Fei Wong opens a rift and attempts to abduct Sakura, but the water protects her. Syaoran runs towards Sakura, yelling at her to open her eyes, before screaming her name. Syaoran suddenly remembers how he cannot touch her, and hesitates. Fei Wong tells Syaoran that his moment's hesitation right there decided his path from here on. Black "goop" forms the shape of wings around Sakura, sealing the "Seal of Death" onto the young girl. When the seal fully covers her body, 'that moment will be the last'. A furious Syaoran asks him what he did to Sakura and uses his spell Raitei Shourai on Fei Wong. Fei Wong quickly counters, knocking Syaoran to the ground using just a finger. At the end, Syaoran is seen disappearing back into his home world, uttering Sakura's name.
Syaoran woke up finding he was returned to Yuuko's shop dying (he used his strength to stop the dimension traveling). Syaoran was cured by Yuuko with a price which his father paid. But then, Syaoran wished to go to Clow country to remove the seal of death in Sakura. Yuuko's price is that Syaoran would never go back to Japan while there exists none in Clow Country who can cross dimensions. At the end of the chapter, Syaoran agreed thus, leaving his family and the happiness he is bearing.
When Syaoran arrives back in Clow Country, he is reunited with Sakura. Seven days have past since the cleansing finished. Beginning to tear up after seeing the seal on her chest, he grabs her hand and pulls her close into an embrace. Sakura blushes madly, but eventually hugs him back. They are shown holding hands, until Syaoran has a talk with Sakura's mother, and Sakura goes off to tell her father of Syaoran's arrival. Although Sakura's mother explains that she can only see the seal of death, Syaoran claims that he can see it as well - most likely what Fei Wong Reed intended. Enraged with Fei Wong Reed, Syaoran states that he will search the country for a way to remove the seal, and won't allow Sakura to die.
Syaoran ~ part 2starlight_19September 13 2009, 06:26:25 UTC
Seven years after, Syaoran returns from visiting another country, trying to find a way to remove the seal. Syaoran picks up a photo of his parents, just as Sakura arrives. The two talk for a while, with Sakura about to tell Syaoran something, before deciding that it can wait until her birthday. As she leaves, Syaoran notices the black wings, that had come along with the death seal, have almost fully grown.
The next day, Syaoran went to the castle. He was chatting with the royal family when Sakura came. Just then, Sakura was enveloped by her black wings. Syaoran and Sakura's mother were the only ones who saw the black wings, so Sakura's mother stopped the time to give Syaoran enough time to stop the seal. Syaoran wishes that he could go back and change the past by taking Sakura's hand before Fei Wong could engrave the seal. Fei Wong, a greedy power hungry man, appears and claims he can grant that wish, but before he can, the circle he is using (Clow Reed's magic circle) changes into the magic circle of his mother. Yuuko appears and states that while she can grant that wish, it would be a grave sin to do so. Syaoran would be able to change Sakura's fate but he would lose his freedom, be placed in grave danger and would be forced to watch only. Syaoran agrees to the conditions and his time is rewound. At this point, Watanuki is created to 'replace' Syaoran as the son of Sakura and Syaoran Li. Syaoran is then taken by Fei Wong, who states that if he cannot use either Syaoran or Watanuki, he will simply create another Syaoran.
He then cloned Syaoran and sent this clone in another world - fully aware that he'll be able to meet Princess Sakura someday. As a young child, the clone was found in the street by the kindhearted archeologist, Fujitaka. At that time he had no name, no memories of his past, and no sight in his right eye. Fujitaka readily adopts him as a son and names him Syaoran. The two travel across the country for excavation work which leads Syaoran to meet Princess Sakura of Clow Country. Even though Syaoran is blunt and emotionless from his mysterious past, Sakura takes an immediate interest in him. Instead of pitying him or rejecting him for not having memories or a birthday, Sakura readily gives Syaoran her birthday (April 1st) so they can share it and tells him that it doesn‘t matter if he has no memories--they can create many happy ones together. She quickly becomes the person Syaoran cherishes most in life.
As a child, Syaoran often feels he is a burden to others because of his inferiority and is constantly concerned about worrying his father or upsetting Sakura when he hurts himself. And though Sakura urges him not to hide his pain and tells Syaoran to let her worry about him, even later in the journey Syaoran hides his true feelings because he doesn’t want to trouble others or make them sad.
As they grew up together, it's very much obvious that Syaoran and Sakura are both in love with each other romantically and though Sakura is on the verge of confessing, Syaoran seems embarrassed at her wish to be called "Sakura" instead of "Princess" and he tells himself it's wrong to be in love with a Princess. He even turns down Sakura's offer to live in the castle with her after Fujitaka dies, because he said only people with royal blood should live there.
While visiting Syaoran at the ruins for lunch one day, Sakura is pulled under an engraved seal to an underground chamber where her heart is transformed into feathers by Fei Wong Reed. In order to 'save' Sakura, Syaoran is sent to Yuuko. Here Syaoran is told that if Sakura remains without her feathers then she will die. But in order to gather her feathers he has to pay a price to Yuuko--the thing he cherishes the most: his relationship with Sakura. He’s told that even if Sakura regains all her feathers she will never remember him or any of the memories they shared together in Clow Country.
Syaoran ~ part 3starlight_19September 13 2009, 06:27:09 UTC
While there at Yuuko's, he meets Kurogane, a rough-mannered ninja banished from his world by Princess Tomoyo, and Fay D. Flourite, a magician who fled his world to avoid King Ashura. Each of them must pay with what he values most in order to gain the power to cross dimensions. For Kurogane, it is his sword Ginryu, and for Fay, it is the tattoo on his back which regulates his control of his magic. Only when the three agree to her terms does Yuko present them with the power to cross dimensions; a white creature named Mokona Modoki.
As they traverse through worlds to find Sakura's feathers, the four travellers and Mokona are forced to overcome many dangers and opponents, some of whom are figures from Syaoran's past who wish to collect Sakura's feathers for their own reasons as they are seen to be objects that hold great power.
Personality: One of the traits that truly stands out from him is his undying determination. Regardless if the situation seems so hopeless, he would still go for it. He even uttered a line which says that even if there's only a single percent of him succeeding, he'll still take that chance and go with it. Mostly this undying pertinacity stems from his equally undying devotion to Sakura. There had been countless of times already wherein his life had been put in danger but, even so, Syaoran always states that he wouldn't die because he still has a mission left to accomplish.
He's also very selfless to people he cares about the most. To save Sakura, he even gave up his relationship with her - sacrificing what he feels just for his most precious person to live. Even if Sakura wouldn't be able to remember him, he still persevered and tried his very best to regain her feathers and her memories. All for the sake of her living.
His strength of heart is also a notable trait. Amidst everything, he still finds a reason to live day by day, mostly for Sakura's sake. Despite the misery he feels from the fact that Sakura will never remember him, Syaoran continues to fight passionately for his “most precious person.” He would fight anything, even characters stronger than him, just to protect Sakura.
Syaoran is also very polite. He would address people with certain respect - giving them what's due to them. This is obvious when Sakura, back when they were still kids, wanted to invite him to live with them in the palace. He refused, telling her that the palace is only for the royalty. And even if he had fallen in love with her, he still found it wrong because he's falling in love with the Princess. Furthermore, when they had met Kurogane and Fai, Syaoran always addresses them with a suffix "-san" that Kurogane found idiotically polite.
He's a bit shy and innocent as well. Often blushing whenever dealt with uncomfortable situations, he would also know nothing of things that are of adult themes. He also feels awkward whenever dealt with his love for Sakura or whenever Fai would tease the two.
Syaoran also has an odd quirk when it comes to history and archaeology. He would often go fanboy about certain artifacts and would become extremely fascinated and curious about it. This mainly came from his foster father's inclination with the subject.
He doesn't want people worrying for his welfare too to the point where he would hide what he feels to them. Back then, he felt like a burden to the people close to him because he would frequently get hurt. He felt like he's giving them reason to worry and be upset.
Syaoran thinks maturely as well. Even if his emotions get the better of him at times, he could pull off a battle strategically. In short, he's an intelligent fighter. He's also very sensitive to what others might feel. He wouldn't lash out words that he feels would hurt the person even if said person lashes out on him. He's very well-mannered too and he wouldn't hesitate reaching out a helping hand to people who greatly needs it. He's also very inquisitive. He would often be seen asking questions to clarify things and would seek knowledge to gain basis to the queries he has in mind.

A-ah... I think this is---
[After a few moments, the feed becomes clearer and Syaoran's slightly scratched face can be seen. He is curiously looking over his computer, trying to figure out what it is. You can pretty much see his confused, if not bewildered, expression as he tries to figure his situation out.]
Wha--what is this? Is it a communications device? It looks much like something people from the Piffle World would create.
[He looks around and then pokes the computer again.]
Y-Yes, hello? Where am I? Is this the new world we got transported to?
[He glances over his surroundings once more and upon finding that he is alone, his features grew shocked. He turns his head from side to side in obvious distress.]
Ah! Where is the princess? And Fai-san and Kurogane-san and Mokona? I guess we got separated too just like what happened in the country of Shara! I have to look for them then! They just might be near!
[He pauses for a while, looking down. It's palpable he's worried as his brows furrow in sheer anxiety.]
I hope nothing bad happens to them. Especially to her highness..
[After a few moments of deep thought, he looks at his computer once more.]
Um, if anyone can hear me... has anyone seen a blond mage, a tall ninja, a brown-haired girl and a bouncing white bunny somewhere? They are my traveling friends. I will appreciate it if anyone can tell me where they are. Thank you.

Third-Person Sample:
They say the rain would wash your pains away with each single spatter. He highly doubted it. Because if it did, he wouldn't be able to feel this much. He should've known that would be her reaction. In fact, he knew that would be her reaction. But, who would've thought that actually experiencing it now would hurt this much?
Who are you?
It burned. Deep into his very soul. He never thought this day would come. And to her of all people. The jolly princess who had the heart of gold. The beaming brown-haired girl that was everything in his life. But now, he was nothing and he would forever remain that way in her eyes. Never to remember their childhood, never to remember his name.
Who are you?
He winced but, he ignored it. This was all for her. He would do anything for her. She deserved to live with all of her memories in tact. Even if it would miss him, he didn't care. As long as she was happy, he was happy. And that was the most important thing.
Who are you?
At that moment, he was tempted to tell her to say his name, to remember him, to remember all the happy memories they had shared together. But, his worst pains were words he couldn't say because she was still the princess and he swore to his majesty that he would protect her no matter what. He would remember his place and he would never fail to forget it, even in the brink of his life.
Who are you?
He was her precious friend. He was the only boy sharing her birthday. He was the boy who fell in love with her and would never stop loving her. He was her sworn protector that would defend her whatever the cost may be. He was the retriever of her feathers, her memories, her life force and he would forever be of her service.
Who are you?
He clenched his fists as he returned home. The rain wouldn't stop, it seemed, as it continued to soak him and the world they were now into. Kurogane and Fai were there waiting by the window when he entered the small household, probably watching the rain among anything else. Mokona bounced on the table beside him, asking him if he was alright.
He smiled. "Yes, I'm fine. I'm sorry if I made you worry,"
He jolted in surprise by Mokona's follow-up inquiry, questioning him if he was crying, as he felt his cheeks with his hand. He noticed that Kurogane and Fai were looking at them contemplatively.
"No. It's just the rain," He answered courteously, that same inscrutable smile on his face.
Sometimes, there was a certain strength needed to be able to cry when you should.

Thank you for your application!
We appreciate your interest in our game and the time you've taken to apply. However there are a few notes about your application.
- You seem to understand Syaoran's personality pretty well, but there are a few inconsistencies with your understanding of his character and your execution. Some parts of his personality are based more on fanon than canon (namely the adult things) and the samples seemed a little inconsistent with the personality section. While you get a grasp for his personality in the first person sample, it still doesn't ring true to his sheer and utter determination - sitting back and asking questions when his princess could be in trouble, and outright handing information around about other people that isn't commonly spoken about (Fay is typically very private about the fact that he can use magic).
- Your third person sample, while well-written, is simply expanding on a canon scene that really doesn't need much expanding beyond what canon gave us. We would encourage you to come up with a new scenario (and apologize for the known inconvenience!); the con scenario offers a multitude of situations to choose from!
We would be happy to see you revise your application as advised and comment back! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let us know and we would be more than happy to help you! ♥

Third-Person Sample:
Bandages after bandages, he wrapped them around his wrist. The woman put up a grandeur fight, stronger than any of the people he encountered before. Strongest because of her bloodthirsty pursuit for violence. Unbeatable because of one minor slip. He winced a little when the bandages hit something painful. He continued on, though, never-minding the petty twinge, wrapping the bandage around and around. Pretty much how life had turned for him.
Images after images, they played inside his mind. The smell of her blood dripping as she punctured her chest. That smell that boiled something deep inside him like wild fire let loose. The woman was too fast. Everything happened in a blink of an eye. He wished he had never blinked in the first place because in that austere moment, he had already failed her. Quick movements, rapid decisions, and swift protection shielded her but, he knew he was too late.
The cold metal felt foreign against his skin.
He shook them off, his face tightening, contorting into an expression only laced with woe. There were tall shadows everywhere in his mind, sinister, mystifying, created only to intimidate like those monster stories perpetually inculcated into children’s chaste minds, only to provide them ample reason to behave. Although, these silhouettes, these products of the human senses and richly expanded by the human imagination, were never there to daunt.
Because mere menaces have never made his courageous spirit dubious.
He had fought greater perils, challenged high-ranking beasts in order to safeguard the one he treasured the most and not a single moment provided him the luxury of hesitation; because an instant of uncertainty meant a thousand beaten battles.
Even with the unsuitable frigid sensation of the unforgiving sharp metal through his body, faltering was a distant memory as he grabbed hold of the sword and kicked its captor. He knew dying wouldn't happen. He knew death was an alien tongue.
Because death wouldn't come upon strong souls who have important duties to see through.
And so, the bandages continued their loop, on and on, enduring never staggering. Once he halted, he knew time would heal his wounds. He knew time would make his body stronger to pain so that, paltry hindrances would never once again damage his hands. Hands he would use to brush away a stray lock covering her eyes while she slept.
Standing up, he made her way to her room where she was peacefully slumbering. He would check up on her, to see if she was alright, to see that serene face. And even if her eyes that held all of him were closed and unconscious, he knew waking everyday with her strength by his side was more than enough.

[The video feed is hazy at first and there can be a sound of someone pushing random buttons.]
[He glances over his surrounding once more and upon finding that he is alone, his features grew shocked. He turns his head from side to side in obvious distress.]
Ah! Where is the princess? And Fai-san and Kurogane-san and Mokona? I guess we got separated too just like what happened in the country of Shara! I have to look for them then! They just might be near!
[He pauses for a while, looking down. It's palpable he's worried as his brows furrow in sheer anxiety. There isn't any time wasted as he dashes off. The feed shows mostly a moving blur but, the pertinacious voice behind it determines the speaker.]
I hope nothing bad happens to them. Especially to her highness..
