(9/29/10)
I did not put the Lady Gaga thing on my phone. I never even heard “Telephone” until yesterday. Kaiden put it on b/c he thought it was funny that I don’t answer my phone, and the lyrics are something about, “Stop calling, I don’t want to talk anymore.” I told him to change it to something I actually like. I don’t want people getting the wrong idea about my taste in music, and I don’t like Lady Gaga!

Yesterday was Kaiden’s birthday. It was a heavily rainchecked birthday, because I was terribly sick the day before and didn’t feel up to doing much. We preluded it by watching a concert video of Dead Can Dance called Toward The Within. We concluded that I ought to acquire an Asian dulcimer, since one of the two lead singers picked one up for $30; Whitemilk’s mother has a hammer dulcimer that she got when we were kids, and I kind of figured all dulcimers were expensive except for my Appalachian dulcimer, which is the prettiest one I’ve ever seen (it has doves and leaves on it instead of hearts) and was $35 at Doc’s Music Box in Harrison, which I believe no longer exists, but an Appalachian dulcimer and a hammer dulcimer are two completely different instruments. I haven’t acquired any new instruments since my Celtic harp a few years ago, and honestly I do not see myself acquiring any more, though I’d love a lute (I’ve always wanted a lute) and I assume I’ll inherit my great-grandfather’s violin when my father dies, since I’m the musical one in the family (which is why I don’t go out looking for an inexpensive one, that and I can only rudimentarily play the violin). I fell asleep before the concert was over, and woke up, as is my recent habit, at 4 a.m. and let him sleep until 7:30, even though he said to get him up at 7:00. We planned for me to make Not Lasagna (cheeseless lasagna with pepperoni instead of noodles, made with homemade tomato sauce), but I wasn’t really up to it, so we decided to go to Acapulco instead. We turned onto Second Street to find it totally blocked since the Farmer’s Fair starts tomorrow, so we walked several blocks and around fair stuff, stopping at the library on the way so he could pick up the next Harry Potter audiobook and a movie that I really would rather not have seen, in fact it made me gasp a lot and I had to outright hide and say, “Tell me when it’s safe to look!” and sometimes closed my eyes, turned away, and put my fingers in my ears until a particular scene was over. It was “Watchmen.” He agreed that it was way too violent and that the graphic novel was much better, and, as he recalled, much less violent. But he could pick anything he wanted, it was his birthday, but Susannah should never watch an R-rated movie, especially if it is a comedy (which it was not). Susannah generally does not watch comedies, because she generally doesn’t find them funny. She does, however, laugh her head off at Gilmore Girls, particularly the first 2 or 3 seasons, not so much because it’s funny, but because it reminds her so much of herself, and the response she has to herself…as many other people are amused by Susannah, so indeed Susannah is amused at herself. For example, two of the main characters decide to go to Florida on Spring break…where they hole up in their hotel room with pizza and “The Power of Myth,” which one has seen 4 times and the other 5. That SO sounds like something that I would do, except that I never went anywhere byt home to my family for Spring Break, and once my senior year of high school, camping for 2 days, but Mom got mixed up and I was in SO much trouble when I got home because Mom concluded that I’d lied about where we were camping (I didn’t) and that I had lied about when I was coming home (I didn’t). You see, we were going to go camping at Clifty Falls in the planning stage, but we changed it to Versailles later on, so Mom only knew we were going to Versailles. And when I didn’t come home the next morning (I said we were camping Monday and Tuesday night, but she was thinking, camping Monday night and be home Tuesday morning, not that we were camping Monday and Tuesday night and be home Wednesday morning, which was the case). It was below freezing and the camp grounds weren’t even officially open until Wednesday, so there was no one else camping. What fun we had! My second boyfriend had just broken up with me and I was miserable. Some of the girls were for me finding a payphone and calling him, but that’s not like me. It’s more like me to develop a huge anxiety disorder and run and hide every time I think I might see him coming. Well, not NOW, but back then. One of the first episodes of Gilmore Girls, which I discovered because my sister used to tape it for my mom, included Rory (one of the main characters) repeatedly running and hiding when she saw a guy that she liked, to the point where he told her he was going to leave her alone because she obviously didn’t like him. The exact sort of thing that I used to do! Except she said, “Wait, I’m interested,” before running away again. It’s that whole “flight” response. I also remember the first time I ever met Kaiden in person, I said, “Hi,” and he said, “Hi,” and I said, “Hi,” and he said, “Hi,” and this went on for about five minutes. This is the exact same thing that happened to two of the characters when they decided to go on their first date. To see moments from your own life on a screen makes you laugh, let me tell you, unless they are very tragic moments, they make you laugh endlessly! Or at least they make ME laugh endlessly.

So anyway, we walked to Acapulco and we ate and their cheese is just as terrible as ever. I didn’t order carnitas like I usually do because I made carnitas last week and dude that is 7 pounds of pork butt. I am still eating carnitas! I hate plastic cheese. But plastic cheese I ate. We also hit the grocery store for a few items and detoured through the country in search of cell towers. We found one not where the map said, but on top of the Pate Aberdeen water tower. The signal wasn’t very good right under the water tower, but we assumed it was being blocked, though we’ve yet to verify that it’s a Verizon Wireless cell tower. The one in Dillsboro I think is T-Mobile; I get almost no signal right next to it! Same with the one in Aurora behind Swifty, only I don’t know if it’s T-Mobile or some other company. I’m in a narrow valley and the cell tower is 4.5 miles away; the range is 5 miles, so I get a little bit of signal, though I’m officially in a No Service area. I am mapping out the CDMA signal throughout my house, as well as anything that might block it (the chimney and closet under the stairs certainly do!) The window to the West of the fireplace is where I get the best signal, which is a very annoying place. There’s also a pocket at the dining room table and two on the balcony, but the best are on the bridge between the deck and front porch and when standing on the cistern lid. Of course. The bridge is right in front of the window where the best signal is. It’s not really a bridge; it is, but it’s just a small little porch-like thing that connects the front porch to the deck so you don’t have to go inside (since there’s a 1-story dropoff at the edge of the front porch), it’s not like it goes over water or anything, it’s more like an overpass than a bridge, really, in terms of functionality.

We didn’t make the apple pie! I was so tired my eyes were watering like crazy during Watchmen. It was 9:30 when we were finished, which is way later than I normally stay up, and I could barely get up to use the bathroom before going to bed for the night, but I knew I’d be up in a couple hours if I didn’t.

I was really too tired to get up this morning, but I was awake and it was nearly 6:00 a.m. and I was happy to get the couple hours’ extra sleep, so here I am typing. And sneezing like crazy.
