[the cows below, though, start to stir with noises, and faint footsteps seem to be coming from below]

[if you can parse scents, you might smell a faint hint of orange blossoms wafting upwards]

[it would appear as though you have a visitor]

[he was never good at paying attention with all his senses at once]

[smiles faintly at the soft steps, not turning around - it must be Bri who has come home early, and in a few seconds he'll feel her arms wrap around his waist]

[... or be tacklehugged into the hayheaps, whichever]

[just like that, the footsteps are gone]

[you might see a white petal float about you before suddenly being hugged from behind]

Perhaps I should have called first♥.

[freezes up]

[why does he never pay close enough attention; one day it'll cost him his head - hopefully not today]

That would have been nice. What do you want? You got your daughter tree back!

[oh crud, that came out more unfriendly than intended]

[play it cool, play it cool, ~no emotions~]

[she lets you go... for now... and is standing up now]

Ah, did I come at a bad time, dear? I only came for a visit to check on my dear colleague, if that is what you mean.

[god, you're a bad assassin for leaving your back exposed]

[he's a bad assassin for too many reasons to count]

[but he won't let that stop him from putting on a friendly smile for you]

No, no, it's not a bad time at all! But - come on, you knocked me out and left without a word last time; you can't blame a man for feeling kind of... uh, what's the word... spurned! What was that all about?

Darling, if I told you, I would have to kill you.

[giggle♥] Of course, I might be joking.

[laughs along]

How much of a secret can it be? You don't honestly believe I was trying cheat you out of something there, do you?

[wanders over to the nearest wall and leans his back against it, leisurely crossing his arms]

Or could it be that you'd like a favour from me for once instead of the other way around?

[much better, you're more aware]

[smiling]

I don't think I could ask a favour from a man who has such a wonderful fiancée, hm?

[tilts his head a little; what does his fiancée have to do with

wait

crud]

[his own smile becomes a lot more strained (not that he would notice)]

[think think think--]

So you...

So you saw the girl! Ha ha.

Yes, I did.

[still smiling, see, some people can actually control their facial muscles]

What a very sweet couple you two make, dear.

Why, thank you!

[tries to turn the smile into a smirk]

She's, she's a darling, isn't she? Ha ha ha!

Fun to, uh... have around..!

[frantically leafs through his memory, trying to figure out when you could have seen them together]

[there are some possibilities he'd rather be able to dimiss]

Hm.

[taking a step towards you]

It seems a perfect match. Such an amoral girl... I imagine she's very tolerant of your job, yes?

[can't quite suppress a brief frown - you did not just call his future wife amoral]

[it's different when he does it; you don't get to say something like that about her]

[quickly puts the smile back into place]

Very tolerant! If she wasn't what would I-- [swallows] -- what would I want with her? I'm not the type to toy around with people; I'd rather invest that time in my tree.

If you are so invested in your darling tree--

[stepping forward once more]

--then why keep her around at all? I do not see the purpose, dear.

She--

[damn crud augh]

She...

She's teaching me some nice recipes, you know? Haha. It's neat to be able to cook more than just omelette!

[laughs]

And now that it's getting colder and wetter every day it's also nice to have a warm body in bed when you're tired after work. What can I say!

[attempts a nonchalant shrug]
