[wedding] fashion question

So, if I have bridesmaids (still not fully decided), I was thinking of letting them provide their own dress. (That is, I would not require that they all buy the same dress of my choosing.)

I planned to say something along the lines of :
A nice black dress, between calf-length and floor-length.

All the bridesmaids would then get some kind of matching wrap (I keep thinking red, but that's because I saw pictures of someone's wedding where the bride did exactly what I said above and each bridesmaid had a red wrap and carried a longstem red rose.) to keep it from being too dark.

I'm not hugely fond of black in the bridal party, but I thought that the wraps might help. Raymond says he thinks black is only appropriate for a winter wedding.

I'd try to make it not black, but that is the easiest color to match when everyone is in a different city. If I said "blue", I'd get as many shades of blue--possibly clashing--as there were bridesmaids.

So, what do the fashion mavens out there say? Is black okay at a September wedding? Are there other options I'm missing? Any opinions about wraps/other accessories I can use?
