"Crying is helplessness, fucking vulnerability".
Not necessarily. It is indeed possible to get to the point that even if crying begins, one goes on doing what s/he's doing (talking, working, discussing things, whatever). It's an ability that can be learned (exactly as keeping memory of what is said and done during a fight) and it takes most of the helplessness out of crying. It's also rather unsettling for anyone who is bastard enough to try taking advantage of the fact one's crying.
Is this also a way to trivialize? If so, being able to go on doing what must be done to save oneself (and maybe others) despite bleeding from a wound is trivializing too.
More on trivializing. Does it really matter that one can easily (too easily) imagine countless other instances of suffering, beside those one has personally witnessed and can put a name to the victims of?
Or, conversely, are those instances one has personally witnessed not enough? They never disappear. One may not *want* them to disappear. The awareness of them may be defining, if nothing else to remember what compassion stands for ("I *need* my suffering!"-- Kirk in ST:V).
Hurting oneself, if one knows what one's doing, is one real way to be in control. But it adds to the sum of the suffering and it speeds entropy. Other options must be carefully considered. "There are always options" (Spock in TOS, somewhere).
DrB seems quite good to work with.
(Better I post before I delete this stuff)
