The history of nationalism is very interesting, and the idea of a nation is actually rather recent. There are many theories concerning the rise of nationalism, and in many ways we are still grappling with its effects today. This segment on nationalism and self determination is based on the history Central and Eastern Europe, where the Empire is the Hapsburg Empire in the 20th century. Standard academic texts on nationalism include Gellner’s Nations and Nationalism and Smith’s National Identity.
