I was so very wrong. SH is again the intuitive-- the enthusiastical, sure-of-himself bright light leading on whoever cares to follow.
I had forgotten about Cuvier, who Conan Doyle once said was partial inspiration for SH. Cuvier could “deduce” the whole build, habitat and way of life of an extinct species from a single fossil tooth; but it was the purest exercise in Gestalt, as there was no way at the moment to falsify the hypothesis through gathering of data.
So, “free will irrelevant to crime”, and only relevant as “culpability” to judges issuing sentences-- all that boring stuff in court. In other times, SH would have made a scary inquisitor =)
“The usual objections” to determinism. A hunt for measurable variables is bound to be futile, if nothing else because the human mind is part of the system itself, and smaller than the whole. My preference is for going straight for the jugular and ask about why is a deterministic chain of events even in place? what started it?
Which is the same as to say, what’s the sense of the big bang? (because sense is the only feature I can confidently believe I can take in. Sooner or later. Or try to).
I love how in the last five paragraphs of “3.Shoes” the pov is turned upside down and SH’s view of the situation fades in.
I wonder about “It would never have worked” and the date July 12th, 2009.
I ache at Lestrade’s frustrated and not-really-voiced yearning for an exclusive, dedicated relationship to pull him out of his isolation.
I must find a way to watch the show.
Thank you.

Can you access megavideo.com where you are? All three episodes are up on that site. They're good quality, though megavideo has restrictions on how much you can watch, something like 72 minutes every 100 minutes. You just have to wait for half an hour or so before you can start watching again.

I realized the point about intuition why I tried (I've tried several times in my life) to apply Sherlock's method. And sure, I could deduce things if I knew where to look, but it was precisely the looking that I realized was Sherlock's genius.

Conan Doyle's Sherlock, I think, cares more about the reasons behind crime. The BBC version struck me as detached from it, and I think it's an interesting trait to consider. To what extent can investigating a crime be separated from the entire apparatus that defines things as criminal?

re determinism: I didn't want to get into a discussion about the "first mover." This piece is pretty narrowly themed, revolving around crime, really.

As for the date-- no significance. I've simply chosen 2009 as my archive year.
