i think drugs didn't have as much influence on their songs as people (the general population) think. i know people who won't listen to their music because they think every song has some hidden drug meaning.

Yeah, I hate that, too. Once in my Psycology class I was trying to tell a group of guys that the NAME for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was derived from a picture John's son Julian made - I said the lyrics of the song itself where definatly influenced by a drug trip, but the NAME was not. That group of guys just laughed at me and didn't belive me.

John blamed himself for introducing Brian to drugs. Should we?

Obviously it helped with their creativity. Drugs did not make the Beatles, but they played a role in the direction which their music went.

I don't really care if they did drugs or not, I don't understand why some fans get their panties in a knot about it.

I agree with a few of the thoughts on here.

My belief was always that the drugs were just a smaller part of their changing moods on spirituality on the whole [and with this came the changes in their music].

I guess my thought is it did influence them to some extent, yes, but if it weren't these changes it would have been others [probably just as good, too. Just a little different].

Do you guys think that the boys would have created the same music they did without drugs? Obviously they wouldn't have since a lot of it--as mentioned in a comment above, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds for example--heavily influenced by drugs. What I mean is...would their style have developed as it did without drugs? Or would they have found another way into their late 60s style? (Musically, I mean. Not fashion.) Their style was also obviously influenced by religion--George and the sitar, etc. So would religion have been their other route into said style? Or would they have gone another way altogether?
