Fannish Excitement

Jan 28, 2013 21:33

I haven't posted forever and ever, and so much has gone on that if I don't give myself a clean slate, I'll never post again, and that would be terrible!  (Uh, nice sentence, Emily).

So I'm stealing this meme from the lovely osprey_archer because it looks like all kinds of fun.  Also because babbling on about fandoms is pretty much all I've been doing recently ( Read more... )

My kindle is named "Scieska" (for all the cataloging features) so I must have gotten that transliteration from anywhere.

Roy/Hughes. I pondered it, but I couldn't figure out how it'd work. Then I read your fics. :D

I said this on twitter, but I couldn't figure it out until I WROTE those fics. Oddly, it took me a lot longer to come to Roy/Riza than Roy/Hughes, though once I did (basically at the gun standoff in vol. 23 of the manga) I was a goner.

I do wonder why there's not more Roy/Havoc. I think that would be great for lolz. (What little there is seems to be based on Havoc reminding Roy of Hughes because. . .they're both tall? I mean, everybody's taller than Roy except for Ed, that hardly stands out.)

I love your thoughts on Ed and would like to see more non-shippy, Roy & grownup Ed in general (I can be sold on them as a post-series ship but it's not my favorite and various experiences have just driven me away from reading stories with the two of them, in general, which is a shame because I love that relationship in canon -- which reads more as a brotherly relationship to me than anything else; and obviously brothers are IMPORTANT to Ed.)

Re: below -- I probably need to dive back into first anime at some point -- I always feel bad that I can't really carry on a conversation with first anime fans. And the idea of the time frame for reading the manga is interesting, because I basically read straight through volume 23, then RE-read before 24 - 27 came out. So the whole Envy showdown is the actual climax of the series for me and the rest of the ending is like -- okay I guess that happened? I keep meaning to read 20 or so through the end again and see if it all comes together better.

Scieska! I think that's how it is in the US published manga - like it's Ishbal, but there are some places that use 'Ishval' and I just can't handle that. (Also that is the best name for a kindle ever. Mine's Catherine Morland because I intended to read terrible books on it)

I fell for Roy/Riza so early on. Like when she told him he was useless when wet. Which - there is no real basis for a ship there, but apparently I cared not. And then the fight with Lust in the tunnels and yeah. Totally hopeless.

I feel like I've seen some interesting fic with Ed acting as a spy/contact for Roy post-canon. Which I could totally buy as long as he had plenty of time to barricade himself in a lab and do his research too. But more gen fic with Roy & older!Ed would be so much fun (esp if it wasn't just happy relationship fluff. Which I enjoy as much as the next person, but there's still so much interesting STUFF there) Roy and Ed as brothers absolutely feels right to me. And it's a hard-earned brotherhood that I don't think either of them would really take for granted.

The first anime is just odd but in an interesting way. Like Hughes' death is almost to the midpoint of the anime and then there's the different worlds thing and no Selim. They seemed to really try to include some pretty big philosophical ideas (some more or less successful...).

I've been meaning to do a whole reread for a while now because it's been so long! But I pretty much need to either check the volumes out of the library or buy my own copies because reading it online with the fan translations just doesn't work. (Also, you know, other issues there)

Full series is about $125 on Amazon! Though that's a lot to spend in a chunk. I was lucky to be able to read most of the books from the library but I have collected ALMOST all of them over the last couple years (I think my 4-6 omnibus is lent out somewhere).

"More Hughes" is the main reason that I want to see the first anime (God, they are SUCH A COUPLE in that; w/in the manga proper and even Brotherhood you have to project a lot of their friendship based on what happens once Hughes is dead, but what I've seen of first anime is super shippy.

Rereading, I'm not sure WHY I didn't get Roy/Riza right from the start -- I think I was just paying attention to so many characters I didn't glom on to anyone in particular until late in the process.

Well. THAT is added to my wishlist now. :D

It's SO shippy. And it also has a lot of Hughes/Elrics interaction which I adore. Netflix used to have the first anime streaming, but I haven't seen it in my queue for a while sadly.

Netflix streaming says it has 51 eps of the first anime; idk if that's the whole thing. I'm planning to get to it eventually, though maybe wait until I've written out a few more of the stories in my head from mangaverse. And then I'll try to remember to watch it as characters I like having different, unconnected adventures, kind of lie the Ultimate Universe used to be for Marvel (or still is, I guess, I just don't know anyone who reads it anymore).

Huh. Apparently it was just removed from my queue. Clearly Netflix has an agenda against me. You're smart to separate them out like that. I watched the 1st anime & read the manga basically simultaneously, and there are still times I forget what happened where.

And that would be because everyone in the Ultimate Universe is a dick. Except Spider-man Peter Parker & Miles.

Oh, yes, I should always have an *except ultimate spider-man caveat when I talk about the ultimate universe. Which reminds me I never saw the second Miles Morales collection and now there are apparently 3 of them, so I ought to catch up on that.

Re: FMA -- I just saw this picture of a puppy. I think it might be Black Hayate IRL!
