Ok so pretty much i'm gonna explain how being an RA works and tell you what happened to me the other night cuz it was pretty crazy!
So when you're an RA you have to be on "duty" every so often which means, while there are other RAs that live in the building, the RA on duty is the one that gets contacted if anything happens and is the one that writes everyone up and deals with everything for that night so that the other RAs can have their own lives.
So thursday, the first day of school, was the first night that i was on duty. Ok so on weekdays we have to do two rounds of the building and make sure everything is ok. Also, while you're on duty, you have this cell phone that you carry around so that the hall directors, front desk, public safety or assistant hall directors can get a hold of you or if you need to get a hold of them... this phone is pretty darn important. So after my first round of the building, everything was fine and i'm getting off the elevator on the 8th floor where i live to go back to my room. So you know how on elevators theres like a 2 inch space between the elevator and the floor that you're going to? (if you don't know what i'm talking about, look down the next time you're in an elevator) Yea so anyway as i step off the elevator i drop the duty phone and it falls in that tiny crack and falls eight stories down to the bottom of the elevator shaft!!! OMG i freaked out cuz now no one can get a hold of me, there is no way to retreive the phone and there's pretty much no chance that it survived and eight story fall anyway.
Then, during my second round of the building, i walked passed this room on an all boys floor and as soon as they see me, they close the door immediately. So i knock on the door and find out this boy is really drunk and throwing up everywhere and his roommate is taking care of him. Pretty much, i just wrote up the drunk kid and left. About 20 minutes later, his roommate comes down to find me because the drunk boy passed out and couldn't be woken up. So when i got there, he was still not responsive so i called public safety so they could come back me up. By the way because we all know how wonderfully well i do with vomit, right... not well at all and let me just tell you there was nothing in the room that wasn't covered in vomit!! Finally the kid came to for like 2.2 seconds and public safety officers manhandled the kid into his bed and decided that we didn't need to call an ambulance even though, i would have preferred him to go to the hospital. I end up staying with the roommate so we can keep an eye on the drunk kid and so we clean up the room a little and take out the trash cans that are full of throw up (3 trash cans!!) to the dumpsters outside. We end just throwing away all of the trash cans cuz neither of us wanted to really clean them out. When i get back to the room we notice that the kid is shaking uncontrollably so i touch his arm and his skin is freezing and while i'm touching him, he STOPS BREATHING!!!! So i shake him and he doesn't wake up and so i shake him really hard and then he gasps for air like he's drowning or something. So i call back public safety and the those idiots just tell me that he's just going through shock and that he'll be fine...ummm hello he stopped breathing! I could have killed those officers! Long story short, i end up staying with the kid until after 4:00am to make sure he wasn't gonna die, went back to my room, filled out the incident report, went to sleep at like 5am, woke up at 8am so that i could tell the hall director about the duty phone as soon as she got into the office, went to class and then had a long heart to heart talk with that drunk boy who was no longer drunk and actually turned out to be a really cool kid! mmmmhhmmm and that was just my first night on duty, i think i'm gonna write a memoir at the end of this year of all of the crazy things that i encounter this year!
Ok that's all my stories for now!
