I've been really evaluating what I want to do with the rest of my life lately. I guess a messy break-up, quitting a great job, and moving across the country will do that to you.
There are exactly THREE stores I know of in this town that sell dog supplies. One of them is PetSmart, which I typically don't buy much at. It's a large chain, and they don't sell quality dog foods. The other is Petland, which I abhor because it is in the business of purchasing and then selling dogs from puppy mills. The third is a small dog treat store in the mall, and they don't allow dogs inside due to mall rules. No, I'm not going to run out and apply for a loan to start my own frou-frou dog boutique with only the best foods and treats. Although, I must admit I would love to do that. I am, however, thinking about dipping my toe into the waters of online business. I'd love to start baking organic, healthy dog treats and selling them online and at local events, festivals, and fairs. Realistically, I don't think I'm going to accomplish this goal in the next handful of months, but I would like to start trying. This means baking a few recipes and seeing what is effective and tasty without overwhelming myself in the kitchen. Ideally, this venture would parlay itself into an actual business with a storefront--something along the lines of the place I frequented when I lived in Albuquerque. However, that's just so far off that I needn't really think of it at the moment. Although, I have been thinking of including hand-knit dog sweaters in this venture since I've sold a couple before.
In the meantime, I'm poking around online and in the newspaper for part-time jobs. I still have funds to sustain me, but I don't want to deplete them too much. Because I do not pay any rent/mortgage, a decent part-time job will pay my bills, leaving me more time to investigate starting my own dog-oriented business. Because if I'm passionate about anything in life, the it is about dogs.
The only thing I have to lose at the moment is the cost of a few ingredients and a minimal fee for web hosting. It's worth it to get my mind moving in a forward direction again.
