Just have to post a rec here first to one of the best vids you'll ever see, New Frontier made by
heres_luck. It's a Serenity vid and its just amazing. Great song choice, cool movement and very interesting. It wows the mind too much to even comment. Go here:

Another great vidding discussion is located here:
http://community.livejournal.com/vidding/493124.html where
absolut3destiny posts feedback about a vid but more importantly goes over some interesting points about narrative, authorial intent and show/vid context. It's incredibly fascinating to think about and gives some tips on making videos better. Things I learned:
1) Look at the clip before and after each clip you put down and think about how it relates. Try to find a connection between clips. I think this works narratively and in terms of the visuals like movement, color, positions, etc.
2) The beginning is hugely important in setting up your vid so don't be random there.
3) Look at the context of the clip from what it suggests to a viewer who's never seen the show and someone who has.
4) Know what you're saying and find a narrative that illustrates that. Go from one place to another, make it a journey.
5) Make sure your song can carry your theme and only choose one. Don't have aspects conflict with each other to the detriment of the vid.
6) Focus on motion, pacing and the flow of the vid. Don't chop up sections using black/white fades unless you want to separate them.
7) Use dissolves to relect a passing of time and one thing turning into another but don't overuse.
On a personal vidding note, how come I keep coming up with video ideas that are mostly about Brian Kinney? I have 4 of them at the moment (3 B/J and 1 ensemble) and even though there are other things I want to vid, I can't seem to come up with songs for them. At the moment I need to actually start vidding although Premiere is giving me trouble so I'll need to figure that out. Technology can just be so annoying.
