THE WEEK: A PHOTO-ESSAY

May 08, 2010 14:13

In keeping with this week's theme of wtftardiness, this is my Friday update! I slip so easily into not updating when I get busy. Or, um, imagine I'm busy when what I'm mostly doing is procrastinating something.

(This week, that something was a proposal for a client. I'm realizing that the proposal stage is the procrastination bottleneck of my projects. I think I hate the part where I have to price things. It's easy to draw a million tiny leaves on someone's proposal; it's something else entirely to make a million tiny leaves in real life! Ugh I will get over it.)

This week's writing--also wtftardy argh!--is a Secret Project so instead of a snippet of WIP, this week's update is PHOTOGRAPHIC. I call this photoessay "Things From My Week, Some of Them Actual Accomplishments."

Let's start with this one!

The pretty!

This lonely print of lymanalpha's Art Deco Spock/Uhura remains after all its siblings left home, because the printer pulled it in a little awkwardly and left no top margin above the image. I should have taken a photo of all the prints together, because they looked beautiful as a group! Luckily lymanalpha was able to recreate the effect on her end:

The big ones came out so beautifully. Next time maybe I'll get big canvas, too. BIG CANVAS O.O!

The printer. I love it! This project was my first one to use the large-format capability. The art sized up to 11 x 17 so well, it does make me curious if it could go to 13 x 19, the printer's maximum size. First I need an excuse to buy 13 x 19 media, though.

lymanalpha asked, "what are those weird objects hanging above the printer?" Here are some of the weird objects:

From left: crazy ivory necklace, wooden rings from 1890s carnival game, ancient measuring tape collection, vintage shell buttons, evidence of strange paper-tag obsession, crochet hooks, embroidery hoops; background: Farrow and Ball color card.

(Explaining this photo made me realize how few of these items I use on anything like a regular basis. Perhaps it's time to reconsider what I keep out in my workroom. Project!!)

Sometimes there are mishaps:

This is what Art Deco Spock/Uhura looks like, printed on the wrong side of the luster paper. It looks kind of Piscasso-like, and also like smear-Spock is fonding smear-Uhura's breasts. This photo was taken on top of my writing notebook, so it's almost like a snippet! This is what I was writing this week, on the train.

(Also, confession! I cropped the image because the word "cock" was visible. I don't even plan to use the word in the story, but it snuck into my notebook! Oh god why am I so conflicted about being a perv? Will write story but afraid to have the word "cock" appear on the internet in my handwriting. WTF.)

Another view of the writing notebook. This is from when I was first thinking about writing fic and still just working through ideas. One day maybe I'll write the first fic idea I had for Spock/Uhura. I didn't end up writing it because I came up with Like the Stars, Like Your Destiny and I liked that head-canon better. (I have a thing, consistency of head-canon between stories. In my mind I divide all my stories into two groups: YES head-canon and violates head-canon.)

lymanalpha pointed out the word "penumbra" is underlined, by itself, on the right-hand page. I still haven't used that word in a story. I'm sure it just came to me and I was like, PENUMBRA. MUST WRITE THAT DOWN.

In other achievements that didn't require much effort on my part, I managed to order my Wacom Intuos4 Tablet, and it managed to arrive! It looks like a piece of Darth Vader's personal desk set. Even the packaging is Darth-Vaderesque:

That stuff inside the lid? Those are the instructions.

I'm excited to learn to use it! But first, client proposal. *\o/* yay client proposal?

The next photo is outside the cut because pretties!

My Vulcan bondmate brought me flowers, and a moss-looking plant that's ostensibly a fern! O.O FERNZEZ
