Basic point = the media/politicians/public are rather selective (and arguably hypocritical) in the violence they choose to criticize. This is not about blaming individual US soldiers.
I think what Devin is trying to say is that the two events aren't in any way comparable. One is a poorly executed war with, no matter how weak, reasons to defend it and possible good that could come out of it. The other was a senseless massacre.
I understand this is your journal and that's fantastic, but too soon. Even if your logic is completely right and your analogy for spray shooting a college campus is equivalent to the war in Iraq, it's the day after a national tragedy. Give it some time before you make a political point out of it.
