Nichkhun walked around the next week a in a complete daze. He messed up at performances, forgetting steps and missing notes. He was scolded and told to work harder, but even when he skipped meals and worked into the morning at the practice room, he made the same mistakes. Again and again.
He couldn’t do anything but think about the gravity of the mistake he’d made.
The worst, though, was when his tired eyes would accidentally drift too far and meet his. But as often as this happened, nothing ever seemed to change. He saw the same dead expression on his face every time.
A week filled with sleepless nights, lifeless expressions, and hidden tears was more than he could take.
He stumbled out of the practice room one night after he thought all of the others had gone home. He was right for the most part; all except for Wooyoung. He walked heavily down the dim and empty hallway, head aching. But he froze when he saw someone round the corner ahead of him. The other person stopped, too…and looked up.
Nichkhun drew in a slow breath when he realized who it was. He stood still, frozen on the spot. The other man seemed to recover more quickly than he did, though, and continued to walk towards Nichkhun. As he passed without acknowledgement, though, Nichkhun turned and grabbed him by the arm. Wooyoung turned with a start, surprise ghosting over his lifeless features.
“Wooyoung.” Nichkhun breathed heavily. “Just talk to me. Please.” Wooyoung just stared.
“Wooyoung, I’m sorry. Please just say something!” Nichkhun said, starting to raise his voice. But Wooyoung said nothing.
“Whatever you have to say, whatever you have to call me, I deserve it! Just say something!” Nichkhun said harshly, shoving Wooyoung against the wall. “If it makes you feel better, hit me! Hit me, I deserve it!” he yelled.
“Just yell at me! Say whatever you want! Hit me!” he shouted, closing the distance left between them and roughly grabbing the collar of Wooyoung’s shirt. Wooyoung just looked at him with that same expression that made Nichkhun feel like dying. He couldn’t take it.
“Why won’t you just say something,” Nichkhun said harshly. “What’s wrong with you?” This seemed to spark something in Wooyoung and his eyes lit up with anger.
“What’s wrong with me?” he growled. “You break every promise you’ve ever made to me, and then ask what’s wrong with me?” Nichkhun’s fingers loosened their grip on the younger man’s shirt as his arms fell to his sides. He took a step backwards, bumping softly into the opposite wall and sliding to the floor. He pressed his hands against his face to try to stop his head from ringing with the words Wooyoung had spoken; but all he saw was proof of them. Small flashes of their past is all he could see:
He closes his eyes and smiles, enjoying the smell of the ocean, the cool breeze, the feel of the warm sand against his back, and the way Wooyoung’s hand fits so perfectly in his own. “Let’s stay like this forever,” Wooyoung says slowly, a smile in his voice. Nichkhun turns and opens his eyes to meet Wooyoung’s. He nods and seals it with a kiss.
It’s raining harder than it has in months, and they’re hopelessly lost. Completely drenched and shivering, Nichkhun pulls them both under an awning to sit on the dry concrete steps. He’s never seen Wooyoung look so pale and the way he can’t stop shaking makes Nichkhun feel helpless. But he wraps his arms around the younger man and pulls him close, tucking his head, wet hair and all, under his chin. “Th-thank you…for keeping m-me safe,” Wooyoung stutters. Nichkhun manages a smile. “Wooyoung, I always will. I promise.”
Nichkhun looked down at Wooyoung who was sleeping in his arms; he didn’t think he’d ever seen something so beautiful. Wooyoung stretched slightly as his eyes slowly opened. “How long have I been asleep for?” he asked drowsily. “Not too long. I didn’t want to wake you,” Nichkhun said gently, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. “I love you,” Wooyoung said suddenly. Nichkhun pulled back to look at him. “I love you, too,” he said, smiling at the random declaration of love. “Promise I won’t wake up to find you gone one day, right?” Wooyoung asked, a hint of seriousness in his playful tone. Nichkhun smiled. “I promise, baby. I’ll be here.”
Nichkhun had never felt more broken in his life. Wooyoung had to strain to hear his trembling whisper.
“Wooyoung, I…I don’t think I can ever fix what I’ve done, the promises I’ve broken. I don’t deserve you and I never have, and I’ll never deserve your forgiveness,” he closed his eyes. “But please just do something to make us even…so I can stop feeling like dying.” he whispered, tears now rolling down his cheeks.
His eyes flew open when he suddenly felt arms tight around him and familiar lips pressed against his own. It took him a moment to realize what was happening before he pulled Wooyoung closer and kissed him back with all the love and devotion he could. It was slightly clumsy, but Nichkhun had never felt anything so perfect in his life.
As they broke apart at last, Nichkhun looked into Wooyoung’s eyes, and realized that he was now crying, too. Nichkhun reached up and softly brushed a tear from his face. “I love you,” he said quietly. Wooyoung leaned in and hugged him, burying his face into the familiar warmth of Nichkhun’s neck.
“I love you, too,” he said softly. “And I forgive you.”
