Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Good: This is a damn well-made show. It's hard to find something about it that isn't good. Even the late-'80s animation is used expertly, with some gorgeous visuals (I'm particularly fond of the shot that ends the fourth episode). Some of the characters start out annoying, but their growing up is part of the point, ( Read more... )

You can get the complete collection really cheap (less than $20, depending) from RightStuf or from Amazon.

Augh, library system doesn't have it. When I have some extra cash, I'll pick it up.

I'm so shameless, I'm more excited for a competent, likable female Gundams pilot than anything else. It's even more awesome because she's the only one.

Yeah, it's a damn nice shot. One of those great uses of late-'80s animation I mentioned.

My desire to watch SDF Macross is hampered by the fact that I can't find DVDs for less than $70 all told--and that's discounted on RightStuf. I'll watch it on the computer eventually, but stuff that I have in physical form comes first for now (yeah, I don't know how Macross Frontier busted that rule--perhaps just because it was so shiny).

I bought my set for $60 last summer from Amazon, but I think it's been discontinued since then. In any case, I think it's available on Anime News Network/Crunchyroll if you can't absolutely find it anywhere.

After my first run of this series many many many years ago, I CRUMBLED! ;o;

Oh, you should definitely check out Gundam 08th MS Team if you like series that doesn't showcase super awesome pilots who can pwn any and everyone (read: Kira Yamato XD). It's another OVA in the UC time line with 12 episode (I think), that focuses on two non-Newtype pilots on opposite sides. Kinda a mix between Gundam and Romeo & Juliet. XD And the supportive characters are great too.

I know, right? It's so heartbreaking. ;_;

I'll have to check that out.

Good to see someone else has seen this. Can't wait to see your review of Loveless (if you do one).

It bothered me quite as well that one of the few female Gundam pilots, like the others, is only shown for a short amount of time. Quick question, have you watch 0083 yet?

No, this is the only UC Gundam I've seen so far. Other than that, I've only seen Gundam SEED, about the first third of Gundam Wing, Gundam 00, and G Gundam.

My suggestion if you want to finish the UC story line:
Original Mobile Suit Gundam: Watch the Movie compilations
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: If you have no qualms about watching a 50 episode series. Watch it. It is good. Kamille is awesome and Char is even more awesome in it.
Double Zeta: Ninja Aztec Pirates.... either that will interest you or make you run away. First few episodes of the series border on crack.
I have yet to see 0083 fully yet, 08th MS team, Igloo, or Unicorn. At least I hope to see more UC from you at some point!
Sorry for posting several days later, I fricken hate college.

0080 was great. The Kaempfer remains one of my two favorite Zeon suit designs (along with the Gouf Custom, which is from 08th MS Team, another OVA series). I still get torn up whenever I watch it.

(also, Nanoha A's!)
And since it was mentioned, I must say the following:

Paaa, pa, pa, paaaampkin! Laaaa, la, la, paaammpkin! Sciiiiiiiii soooooooooorss.... Scissors!
...ahem. That's out of my system now.
