Neville, Luna, Charlie, Percy, Victoire, Merope, Barr, Snape, Regulus, Cho, Teddy and herself. The names wound their way in circles in Ginny’s head, trying to sort together in groups, trying to find a reason why they would be the ones chosen. What was it that made them similar? Well, her, Victoire, Percy and Charlie were easy, they were all related. By extension one could consider Teddy part of their family. But that left the rest. She, Merope, Snape and Neville all had history with Voldemort, or at least a more personal contact than most.  Snape and Regulus were former Death Eaters. Everyone but Merope, Teddy and Victoire had been Hogwarts’ students. Percy and Cho had Ministry ties. They had all lost someone, but who could say otherwise nowadays. She was beginning to wonder if this place had chosen them, not because of a common thread, but simply to prove it could take anyone.

She should be sleeping. It was early enough still to warrant that, or at least she thought, being that there was no way to tell time it was hard to know for sure. She was pretty certain she was the only one in the woman’s room still awake, her mind racing too much to think about sleep. Sleep here had been hard to come by. There was too much worry for that. Not necessarily for herself but for those left behind. She dreaded to think of how Harry was taking her disappearance, not well she imagined. She just hoped he didn’t do anything rash or stupid; she wanted a husband to come home to when this was all over. She thought of Bill, Fleur, Tonks, and Remus a lot. She couldn’t imagine the fear that would come with having a child missing. She hoped that finding Charlie, Percy and herself gone to would offer at least a small measure of comfort, knowing that their children were with family at least. Ginny doubted that it would though, at least not until they had their children back safe and sound. She missed Harry, she felt a little lost and incomplete. Luna had the same look too, the sort of unbalanced way of being, glancing beside herself for the person she knows should be there but isn’t.
Her nightmares had come back with a vengeance as well. Something about being locked away that brought out the worst in her subconscious. She dreamed of Hogwarts, of detentions in the dungeons there. She dreamed of being lost and left behind. After overhearing Percy and Merope talk and learning why the girl had seemed so vaguely familiar she started seeing Tom Riddle every time she closed her eyes. Forever young and disarmingly handsome despite the horrors she associates with him.
“Ginny?” A small voice pulled her out of her thoughts. “Can we go home today?” Victoire asked, sitting up in the bed her hair a dishevelled mess. Ginny sat up and ran her hands through her niece’s hair. Victoire had taken to sleeping in Ginny’s cot, afraid to be alone.
She tried to smile at the girl but fell short, “I don’t know, maybe tomorrow.” The words sounded wrong to Ginny. She doubted there was any truth to them. “Let’s go see if breakfast is out and clean up, okay?” Ginny stood and reached for Victoire’s hand. The pair left the woman’s room and headed into the common area. Ginny took Victoire to the small wash area and helped her wash her face and hands; she tried to detangle the girl’s hair a little. They moved to where the food was set out and took their share of the morning’s breakfast. Settling into a spot Ginny tried to pick away at her food while Victoire ate and chattered nonsense to fill the quiet.
