Charlie walked down High Street, hands stuffed into the pockets of his coat and the lower part of his face hidden behind a thick scarf. The weather had taken a turn for the worse and even though it was decidedly March, it was also chillingly cold! He cursed and grumbled as he continued on. He had spent his days in Annwn wandering around aimlessly. He had no idea where he was going and he only had a room at the inn to return to. That in itself was boring and so he stayed out all day to avoid the place.
He weaved in and out of the crowd, jumping away to not have his feet stomped on or avoid bumping into people. Suddenly he found himself being pushed against a wall and he groaned as the air was forced out of his lungs. Charlie braced himself against the bricks and he caught his breath, leaning back and thumping his head on the hard surface. He blinked and looked up at the wall, his eyes catching sight of the depilated wooden sign, the gold letters long since withered off with time. He could barely make out the words.
He pushed away from the wall to get a better look at the shop; he supposed that it was one. The windows were barred with boards and the façade was in dire need of some freshening up. He walked along the wall to the door, it was halfway off its hinges, halfway open and halfway barred with boards like the windows. But, he was still able to make his way inside, his curiosity driving him forward.
Somehow he knew that he would find something special in here, something he might have been searching for. Something he might not even know that he was missing. The shop area was dark, only a few beams of light filtering through the cracks in between the boards and he could see the thick layer of dust covering the floor and the sparse furniture still in the room. A few empty cages littered the floor along the walls. They looked like they had once contained living beings; they were large enough for it.
Charlie moved further into the small shop, lighting up the area with his wand as it got darker. He walked around the counter and found the floor littered with old receipts for dog food, toys, leashes and other things one would buy for a pet. He frowned, an old pet store… He looked up again and went into the completely dark backroom. Holding up his wand, Charlie let the small light grow stronger as he looked around. At the very end of the backroom stood a rather large water tank, its sides completely blackened. Slowly, he moved closer to it. His curiosity was severely peaked.
Steeping up to the tank, he peered over the edge and into the dark, murky water. A thin film covered the water surface and Charlie hesitantly brushed it away with his fingers. He arched an eyebrow and looked closer when a movement in the tank suddenly caught his attention. He blinked, refusing to back away. He was a dragon handler, dammit! He didn’t back away from something, even if he didn’t know what it was.
Something moved again in the tank and Charlie held his wand over the water. It was then he saw it; the small creature which was happily swimming about in the dark water. It was slim and long, its human like skin was a pale, albino colour and it had four small legs, its head was formed like a rectangle. He stared. It looked like a small Chinese dragon. Almost like the Fireball, only the colouring was different.
Suddenly it swam up to the surface, staying just below it and Charlie was able to see it more clearly. He stared in awe. A
Proteus. He breathed in and looked at the small creature. He had never thought that he would see any of its kind. The Proteus was a recluse animal, living in the dark cave systems of southern Europe. Charlie looked at the albino Proteus, though it couldn’t look back at him, being blind with its underdeveloped eyes.
A smile slowly spread across his face when another movement in the tank caught his eyes. Appearing just below the surface and joining its tank mate, two small and beady black eyes stared up at him curiously. He barked out in laughter with joy and wonder, causing the creature to blink. A
black Proteus inhabited the tank as well, he mused. Then suddenly both creatures disappeared into the murky water, leaving Charlie to look at the tank in contemplation. He tapped his fingers against the side of the glass and glanced at the dark back room.
How could someone have just left them behind? They were living beings and needed to be tended, to be fed and have their tank cleaned. At least, Charlie knew that the little critters could live for years without food and they looked healthy, otherwise he would have been out for blood. But, to abandon living creatures for Merlin who knew how long… it infuriated him. He wanted to bring them home with him, to care for them. He looked around the room again and wondered how many animals had lived here.
Slowly a thought began to take form in his mind along with a bright smile. He wanted to take care of the two Proteus and it had always been his passion to take care of animals, big and small. An image of him standing in this shop surrounded by animals of all kinds, flashed by him and Charlie looked around in wonder.
Maybe he had found a new path.
