A comic I just shared on X saying that the internet isn't fun anymore and giving several points of why, gave me an idea. Facebook used to have "groups" with lots of useful tools to deal with trolls but lacked methods to deal with hostile hijacking of the group. In response, Facebook just removed all those tools to make the groups feature useless. This includes several groups I was in control of that appear to remain active while I am booted from Facebook due to a refusal to reveal my real name online. Wikipedia has to deal with people trying to weaponize the content including blocking the existence of content they disagree with. They have failed in this effort on several issues but the tools have been tested and refined. If I make a Facebook-like social media platform,I need to add a "groups" feature with Wikipedia-like tools and Facebook's old groups features as inspirations. X used to have groups-like features that Elon replaced with "Spaces" but Spaces is really just a glorified IRC or similar chat platforms which is fundamentally different than a group. Forums are also a unique form factor so many groups I was involved in had a forum or email-group (like Yahuoo used to host) but if the group didn't have a controllable website as the key content source, the forum or email group wouldn't last. Of course trolls and hostile take-overs and DDoS attacks killed those types of platforms (email groups, forums, IRC, Jabber).
