I don't watch anymore, but I've been informed of the Sayid storyline...I'm sure you can understand how, as a die-hard Shayider, I'm not terribly happy that Shannon's been utterly forgotten!
Yeah - I felt the same about Nadia up until I saw her funeral ;) There's just something about that old-school romance that I adore, both with Sayid as a character and with the S/N ship.
I had never been sure Sayid was in love with Nadia so much as needed to put the past and his own actions to bed -- but then his two episodes in season one, and then his relationship with Shannon, seemed to indicate that he was coming to terms with that without needing to have the in-person closure. And I was even less convinced that Nadia felt anything for Sayid except that she was playing him for all he was worth to keep from being tortured/to get released from prison. But that's just me!
Oh yes, it's far from uncomplicated (which I love, of course...). I haven't actually watched S1 since sometime before Christ but I do remember always being very sold on this story. I hope we get some flashbacks of their married life though, so there'll be a bit more real life and less romance novel - even I have a limit, and I am intrigued to see how the very issues you point out get resolved. Or maybe they never did, they were married for such a short time that they may still have lived in the romantic idea of it all? Ah, I guess fan fic was invented for this precise reason...
