Summary: A very short little scene. Set waaay pre-series.

Normally, Nathan did exactly as he was told. He did what was expected of him at all times except where Peter was concerned. His brother was the exception and always had been. After being home from college for the weekend, he should have been back at University and in class right now. While one day was nothing given the average amount of classes most college students skipped, Nathan rarely got out of line like this. He rarely skipped class as he was now.

’They wouldn’t let me play with them cause they say dad’s a bad man.’ Peter had informed Nathan over the phone through uncontrolled sobs that only a child could honestly pull off.

Nathan had reminded Peter that he had his phone number if he needed to call him and that he could be back home within hours. He had assured him that their father was not a bad man, even though he himself questioned the fact at times. He had even stayed Sunday night instead of going back to school to stay with Peter and try to make things okay. Staying meant that he left early Monday morning to return to classes, something that was never fun.

Still, Peter had cried again when Nathan had pulled out of the drive early this morning to try to make it to class on time. Halfway between college and home, Nathan had buckled and turned back. Peter was just starting his school day by the time Nathan returned and since then he’d been sitting out in his car waiting impatiently for recess.

Nathan looked down to his wristwatch and back up to the playground where Peter played on the jungle gym with the other children in his school. He knew that if his parents found out that he wasn’t in class, there would be some kind of reprimand. But where Peter was concerned, he almost always forgot to care about himself. He wasn’t going to let some punk kids pick on his baby brother.

Just when he made up his mind to get to school and not miss anymore classes for the day, he saw some boy push Peter away and yell at him. Instantly, Nathan was out of his car and stalking across the playground. “Hey, Pete. Is there a problem?”

“Nathan!” Peter exclaimed, his arms circling around his brother. “They won’t let me play.”

“Mmm, that’s a pity. We’ll just have to remove all of this playground equipment, won’t we?” Nathan rested a hand protectively on Peter’s shoulder, knelt down and straightened the crooked tie of the school uniform at his brother’s neck. He spoke to Peter but loud enough for the other children to hear. “I mean, our family did pay for it and we donate enough money to this establishment to own the building and all of this equipment combined. And… since you’re in our family, that makes all of these toys partially yours along with mine and mom’s and dad’s.”

A slow, crooked grin spread over Peter’s lips as he understood what Nathan was saying. He nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah!”

“So in all actuality, they should be asking your permission to even be in this playground, much less play with the toys in it.” Nathan lifted a conspiring eyebrow at Peter. “Does that make sense to you?”

“Yeah, Nathan! Yeah it does!” Peter said excitedly.

Nathan grinned and ran a hand back over Peter’s messy hair. “Of course it does. You’re highly intelligent and it would only confuse those who are lacking in that area… those who are not as smart as you are, Peter.” Nathan turned to look pointedly at the group of boys, all watching him wide-eyed. “Does that make sense to you boys?”

“Yes sir.” “Yes Mr. Petrelli.” “Yes.” The boys all nodded quickly.

“Good. Then I suppose we can leave the playground where it is. Peter, do you give them permission to play here?” Nathan looked back to his brother, the corners of his lips lifted just barely in amusement.

“Well I don’t know… they were kinda mean to me.” Peter said honestly.

Nathan stifled a laugh and nodded. “I can understand that. I can, but it would be almost too kind and grown up of you if you would though.” Normally, he wouldn’t have made such allowances for anyone who hurt Peter. But these were just kids, after all.

Peter seemed to deliberate before finally nodding. “Okay. I’ll be grown up. They can play here.”

“That’s very nice of you to allow them access.” He hugged Peter who enthusiastically hugged him in return. “I’ll see you next weekend, okay?” He whispered into his brothers’ ear.

“Okay.” Peter whispered back. “I love you, Nathan.”

“I love you too, Peter.” Nathan kissed Peter’s cheek and then stood up to start back to his car. He couldn’t help the smirk and smile at the sound of his Peter’s voice behind him.

“So I get to be king of the mountain and you’re all my loyal subjects!”

And then the other boys following his brothers’ declaration.

“Okay Peter.” “Alright.” “Can I be second in command?”

While being a Petrelli oftentimes could be a curse, at times it also had its perks. And Nathan had learned how to work the Petrelli name in his favor long ago from both of his parents. In fact, he thought that if his father knew about this little exchange that he would have been proud of his oldest son.
