“Mr. Thomason…” Gil set photo after photo of the small hidden room they had found in Kent Thomason’s home on the table top in the interrogation room. “We took these of Michelle’s room in your home. I’m sure they look familiar.”

Kent leaned forward in his chair and studied the photos. “Thorough, aren’t you?”

“We do tend to be thorough, yes.” Jim answered, stepping closer to the table. “What happened to Michelle, Mr. Thomason?”

Tapping an index finger over the photos for a moment, Kent pursed his lips thoughtfully. After a moment, he leaned back in his chair and looked up to Detective Brass. “She’s gone. We cleaned up her mess and she bolted. I was being honest when I said I didn’t know, Detective.”

“She got out of those chains and she bolted?” Gil asked.

“No, after the incident with Mira… she ran. We told her what we had done and she ran.” Kent answered, running his fingers over his lips. “I’m telling you that we don’t know where she is. But if you find her… tell her I want my money back.”

Jim arched a brow and shook his head. “You’re telling us that she took your money and bolted?”

Kent nodded. “Fifty thousand dollars of my money.”

Gil sighed and walked out of the interrogation room without a word. This case was solved. They knew what had happened to Mira and he shouldn’t be concerned with her mother, Michelle. There was no answer he would be happy with where Michelle was concerned. So often cases left a sick feeling in his stomach like this and lately it had happened more often than not.

He found Catherine and asked her to pull Kent Thomason’s bank records although he knew it would lead nowhere. Then he went to his office and shut the door, even going so far as to close the blinds. He left the lights off and moved across the room to lay down on the couch that lined one wall. There wasn’t too much that he could complain about. He had a closed case for the most part which was much more than he usually had.

A closed case file… now on to the next.
