White Collar 1x05 The Portrait reaction post
Hi all! Sorry I haven't been around much lately. It just seemed like so much work, having to get on and check my flist before it got too big and I was having to ?skip=1000. It was taking all the fun out of being in my fandoms. Twitter helped a lot with that, because I stopped checking LJ, so I wasn't as stressed, but I was still connected with your lives. Here's to hoping this isn't the last post for another 6 weeks!
This show is amazing. I'm all googely eyed over it. Look, it's making me post for the first time in 2 months! I couldn't not, it kept being all awesome and stuff.
How slashy was this episode? So slashy! I've been hooked into Neal/Peter/Elizabeth in a big way so far, and the shows usually does give us great OT3 scenes to work with, and this episode did too, but it was really all about Peter and Neal for me tonight.
Neal's "I can handle temptation," in the car at the start, and then the look they share. Your eyes saying something neither of you want to put into words yet, boys?
Peter being jealous of Tarryn the minute Neal sees her. You can almost see him going "Hey Neal, I'm over here, look at me Neal, look at me!" Bless. Then Neal looks almost guilty for the casual flirting, which come on - this is Neal Caffrey, the man was born to flirt. So why does he look ashamed when Peter catches him doing it? This is something that happens in almost every episode, mind you, not just this one. Thank you, show writers. :P
Ok, so I know next to nothing about fashion, but goddamn Neal looks good in those suits of his. That dark blue one he's wearing in the art gallery? And his posture when the scene starts? Hot. Just an observation. *g* Is it ridiculous to also notice that Neal had his hip cocked towards Peter during that whole scene? Yes? Never mind then. >.>
Peter "warned" Tarryn about Neal? Warned her off what he unconsciously sees as his? Hmm? I am ridiculously tinhatty about this show. This is probably clear by now.
(I like to think Peter shifts uneasily in his seat when Neal defended monogamy. It makes his skin prick uncomfortably for some reason, and he runs his finger under his collar to loosen it.
Neal is wholly in his role of George Devere as he speaks though, channeling his namesake's devotion to his wife. He doesn't realise until many months later that Peter still doesn't always know when he's just playing a role. It makes him smile to think he can still pull one over the great Peter Burke.)
You think maybe Peter pushed Neal into the car a little harder than normal, right when Tarryn was looking at Neal all speculative like? (Sorry for the wording, I've been reading Firefly fic.)
[Kind of random, but when Julieanna described her attacker as a "monster", where did my mind go? Straight to a SPN crossover. *shakes head*]
How cute are Peter and Elizabeth walking down the street together holding hands? SO CUTE. I just want to smish them.
Speaking of Elizabeth, she gets right away that flirty!Neal is Neal's default. "But honey, that's who Neal is. That's never going to change."
Also, how poly is this conversation?
(E): "Who's the new girl?"
(P): "Tarryn Van Der Sandt(?)."
"Hmm, don't know her."
"She's a buyer at the Lambert(?) gallery. She's beautiful, seems nice."
"Well, if Neal's interested, you should encourage it!"
"Encourage it? Oh, I need that like a hole in the head."
"Honey, if he falls for the new girl, he might actually stop chasing Kate."
"Ohh."
How much does that sound like Elizabeth knows about Peter's feelings for Neal, probably has them herself, but they're both worried about Neal running off with Kate and never seeing him again? Especially after Neal's remarks about monogamy earlier. At least if he's with Tarryn he's still in the city, still Peter's partner, still in their lives? Again yes, I am a shiny shiny tinhatter. I don't know what this show has done to me!
I don't know anything about art, but I could listen to Neal talk about it all day. It's obvious how much he loves it, not just forging it (allegedly) for the money.
Peter and Neal bickering over the radio. It's just adorable, hands down.
And then the crane! "That's for you." Goddamit Neal, stop being so precious. But then of course, "Shenanigans?" SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP. >.<
Poor Peter is so distressed about being alone in the hotel room with Brigitte and Clair! I laughed, I'll admit it. The way he keeps calling out to Neal for help... *shakes head fondly*
When Elle and Peter are talking about Neal stealing the painting, and maybe going back to jail, she asks him if he'll be okay. Would a normal FBI Agent/ex-convict partnership leave the agent distressed, sad, angry and disappointed that the convicted felon in his care relapsed and might be sent back to prison? So much so that he needs to elicit comfort from his wife?
His wife. His wife that tells him she knows he's a good man, that honesty is pretty much always the best policy, that he should just tell her the truth and they'll deal with it together. (So I'm reading into her facial expressions, sue me.) His wife that *then* asks him how cute Brigitte and Clair were. Peter's mumbling and pleading of the Fifth let me infer that Elizabeth is trying to get Peter to open up to admitting his feelings for Neal by making him admit he finds people other than her attractive, which Peter still feels uncomfortable doing. The Elizabeth in my head rocks, btw.
After Neal tells Peter about the painting, the little hug Peter and Elle have? "It's a start." OH MY HEART.
And then he didn't even keep the painting! He gave it back to Julieanna! IT'S A START, OKAY.
Wow, Kate and Elizabeth look a lot alike. I hadn't really noticed before. And hah Kate, Neal totally doesn't trust you. *I* don't trust her. I don't know why, but I think her wanting him to tell her where all his secret treasure is hidden is a part of it. She's being all manipulative. I don't like it.
Argh, I love this show! The dynamics between Neal, Elizabeth and Peter are so intriguing, and the amazing fic that's popped up already is astounding. I have eps 6 and 7, but I haven't watched them yet so no spoilers please. Thank you and good night! <3
