Day 15 - Fave Rose Moment
Can I choose two moments again? The first one I chose because it shows how far Rose has come since the first episode and the second because I love it when the companions act like total BAMFs.
In "The Parting of the Ways," the Doctor has kept his promise to Jackie Tyler and sent Rose home when it becomes apparent that he cannot protect her. Rose finds herself in a completely mundane situation: sitting in a chip shop eating a meal with her mother and her boyfriend. Even though Rose is trapped in the 21st century, she's still straddling her old world and her new one. While she is stuck in the chip shop listening to her family is prattle on about unimportant things, her mind is with the Doctor and the fight for the human race and fate of the Universe.
While there is no question that Mickey and Jackie love Rose, they've always held her back. Rose grew up in a culture that does not appreciate or support a person bettering herself. Jackie made this clear in the first episode when she said that Rose working in a department store was giving her "airs and graces," and suggested she work for the butcher instead. This attitude surfaces again when Mickey takes offense to Rose objecting to living a normal life.
ROSE: But what do I do every day, mum? What do I do? Get up - catch the bus - go to work - come back home - eat chips and go to bed? Is that it?
MICKEY: It's what the rest of us do.
ROSE: But I can't!
MICKEY: Why, 'cos you're better than us?
ROSE: No, I didn't mean that! ...But it was... it was a better life. And I - I don't mean all the traveling and... seeing aliens and spaceships and things - that don't matter. The Doctor showed me a better way of living your life. You know, he showed you too. That you don't just give up. You don't just let things happen. You make a stand. You say no. You have the guts to do what's right when everyone else just runs away, and I just can't--
Rose has learned a lot from her time with the Doctor. She won't consider going back to a mundane existence. She works and fights to get back to the Doctor and save him and the Universe.
I also love the part at the end of "The Satan Pit," when Rose uses a bolt gun to shatter the windshield of the rocket she's riding in, then disengages the harness holding the Beast in his seat, causing him to be sucked out into space and the black hole behind them. She's just awesome in that scene.
I love you, Rose.
