Day 13 - Favorite childhood show
Thundercats
I didn’t realize how hard it would be to choose a favorite show from my childhood. The thing is, I didn’t watch a whole lot of tv when I was small. We didn’t have cable and since we lived in the middle of Nowhere, Idaho (literally on a farm in the country), our antenna didn’t pick up much. I remember our PBS affiliate would go off the air for a couple of hours every afternoon. When we did watch tv, it was usually shows that were geared more towards adults like M*A*S*H or Three’s Company.
But there was one show I liked quite a bit and that I would watch whenever I was able: Thundercats. It’s hard to explain why I liked this show. The best I can do is say that I was 7 years old, I liked cartoons, and I liked cats. Jam all those things together and you’ll get why I liked the show.
There were things that bothered me about it, though. I hated that the animation of their lips never matched what they were saying and I always thought Snarf was always annoying (Oh, how I hate you, Snarf). I also never liked how every episode ended with everyone laughing. Even my 7-year-old self knew it wasn’t that funny.
I tried to watch an episode of Thundercats a few years ago and found I couldn’t do it. It was completely unwatchable. I had no idea when I was 7 that the show was that awful. But I will always have fond memories of swinging a broom around like the Sword of Omens and crying out, “Thunder! Thunder! Thundercats! HO!”
I like to think my taste in television shows has improved since 1985, but Thundercats might have been the show that began my love of sci-fi and fantasy.
