11) Ben and I were set to receive orientation at a family (women with children) homeless shelter last Wednesday, but it was canceled due to snow. So we will begin this upcoming Wednesday. We are volunteering with Horizons for Homeless Children in which we play with children, to help their early development for the time we're there, and to give the parents time away from the kids to do other things like learn things and get jobs.
http://horizonsforhomelesschildren.org/ I don't know how effective the program is for long-term development purposes, but they actually also run daycares that are shown to improve situations for kids who are homeless or have very unstable home lives. Children learn quickly, so I think even 2 hours a week would help. But they have people in 4 days every week, so that's actually better than once a week. However, most kids don't stay longer than a couple weeks. What do they do after they leave the shelter? Argh.
