One more thing ( Read more... )

I could be way off-base on this, because I've never heard your upstairs neighbor, but I tend to think this is just typical apartment life. I mean, there's a reason most people hate living in apartments and why buying a house seems like a holy grail to 20-somethings. Apartment living has many drawbacks, noise being one of them. It seems like everyone who lives in an apartment complains about either their upstairs neighbors or next-door neighbors. In NH we could hear our next-door neighbors all the time. Here we can hear our upstairs neighbors from time to time, but in general it's much quieter than NH. I attribute this to better construction and not more considerate neighbors.

In other words, I think there's a good chance your neighbors are not actually particularly heavy walkers, but that your current apartment is older and more poorly constructed than where you lived in IL (this would make sense since the farther west you go the more likely you are to be living in a newer building that would have been designed with more focus on comforts such as soundproofing.)

In Illinois I actually spent very little time in places not on the top floor (very nice), but the noises always bothered me. The campus apartments get the cheapest constructions possible, usually. I wrote posts about my last apartment in IL too, heh. They kept an interestingly regular schedule, actually, but they would also throw their beer bottles two floors down to the closed lids of recycling bins which were right next to people's bedroom windows. They really belonged in a frat house. Anyway, I am definately more annoyed by the standard unavoidable things than other people. I just don't get along well with 'people' in general, so it's really good I don't live in Taiwan. People there are pretty ridiculous in terms of selfish behavior that inconveniences or that affects other people. There is just no concept of how something will affect someone else. That probably relates to how my mom and coworker think and communicate (somewhat talked about in some recent previous post). There are definately people in this building that are considerate in certain ways that other people are not. Like I talk constantly through the hallways. I just can't/won't stop :) But some other lady constantly talks on the phone in the halls. Kind of weird, actually.

About the hall phone lady, maybe she has a husband/roommate who has a different sleep schedule and so she goes into the hall so as not to wake him up. I only think of this because I did this all the time at Wheaton and so did my roommate because we would always sleep at completely random times, usually during the day, so the other would go into the hall to talk on the phone.

That's probably it. She's Indian, and there's also this Indian guy (they're both new to the building) who used to spend a lot of time in the halls and right outside the door. They probably live together and just talk on the phone constantly and obviously have to do it in separate locations. Heh. It would be funny if that were true.

Anyway, that's really considerate of you guys. My freshman year I started to keep really really bad hours, and my roommate was really responsible, and by the end of the year she was, like, banging doors and drawers when I was asleep at 3 in the afternoon :) She always said I didn't wake her up at night, but I probably did. I also ate all of her goldfish...

While writing response to jadeejf I remembered a girl whose LJ I used to read. I wrote about that in the big paragraph in that response. But I actually think part of my problem with people comes from that girl. I, like, actively disliked her for a period of time. I just thought she was so retarded and when I go and read sometimes I still think so. But I feel bad saying this stuff too cause I see a lot of myself in what she writes :) She actually reminds me of someone else who writes posts similarly... The way some of the sentences come out. It just makes them seem a certain way, but I'm still not sure what it is.

I'm not sure if I'm more crazy than I was before, or the same.

Ha! Jym was somewhat afraid that response was about us with identifying details changed.

Wow, you're probably up for the morning and we haven't gone to bed yet. =0

Heh, that made me laugh. Now that the moment is over, though, it's not as funny. Still kind of funny. But then I think about the girl again and it's almost as funny :)
