Thankfully, tenure at schools like mine isn't quite that competitive, but still...entirely too close to home.

Watching that reminded me that my decision to stay on the outskirts of academic politics was not completely misguided.

It can certainly be a mess. The tenure process at Research I schools is very different than at the smaller private schools - not necessarily any less stressful, but different. Here, they really would have no problem if everyone that was hired got tenure, assuming they met the standards, which is helpful. Also, a lot of smaller schools don't subscribe to the publish or perish mentality, which removes some of the harder edges of competitiveness from everything.

I know it was vicious at my grad school, and many of the professors talked ugly about their colleagues to the grad students.

Yeah, I know some places where it's more of a zero-sum game. I wouldn't last long in that environment. I'm freaking out enough as it is.

Are you going for tenure this year?

Yep. 176 days until the application is due. Not that I'm obsessing or anything.

Just remember that regardless of what happens, there's no need to shoot anyone.

That's not on my things to do list. If it goes wrong, it's their loss, not mine.
