Breaking news: anniehow sometimes posts!

There will be a ranty post about July, the month of gainful employment that sucked my soul (soon to a cinema near you!) but it will be probably boring, as most rants are, and... self-indulgently ranty. This is not that post.

I have a 'temporary' folder in my bookmarks where I keep links to fics I want to rec. Some of those links are now more than a year old (fandom!fail, damn me) and will end up being horribly outdated once I do post them, so for once I thought I'd jump the gun, and instead of working on the backlog, having ten minutes together to form a post I decided to link ya'll to a couple of Sherlock fics instead!

You know Sherlock, right? It seems all of Fandom is abuzz with excitement about it. For my part, I really like Martin Freeman (even though I spent an embarrassing amount of time in the first episode telling my brain to give him his own well-deserved corner of squee and to stop confusing him with The Simm) and I think for once Watson is the more interesting character of the two, which I'm fine with, and I love how screwed up in his own right he is (h/c buttons activating in three... two... one...).

The general consensus seems to be 'Sherlock is great but I don't find him hot', and here I (maybe?) break away from that, because from the moment he appeared on screen I was fascinated. We're not talking about deep, character/acting/writing analysis here, I'm saying I was a puddle of 'grey eyes! Of such an unusual cut! omg cheekbones! Curly dark hair! UNF surprise!deep deep voice on such a slim man!'. I think he looks positively elvish. I mean, if they were casting for LOTR again, I'd be starting a petition to Peter Jackson.

Also, Lestrade. On paper, that's such an awful character to have to play, but the actor made me love him so much!

Visually, it's scrumptious. It gives me the same satisfaction as high-quality costume dramas, and I love what they've been doing with new technology.

'Course, I have some issues: like others, I kinda figured out the killer in the first episode right at the start. In the second, ye olde mysteerious oriental villains made me go more wtf? than 'they are different and creepy!' which seemed to be the point of a lot of the setting (seriously, the montage of The Orientals Are Watching You set to creepy music? With several shots of bored teenagers? I'm supposed to find that inherently creepy? Really, Moffat?).

But anyway. I hear there's only three episodes so far, which makes me :( but that they might also shoot more, which makes me :)

In the meantime, is anyone surprised that there's already fic of decent length and of high quality for the subset of an old, venerable fandom such as Sherlock Holmes?

Homemaking, gen, by rageprufrock, Watson pov featuring the elusive Clara & Harry back-story as glimpses through John making himself a home at 221B Baker Street. Really awesome.

The Trick Is To Make It Look Easy, slash, by paperclipbitch, not particularly explicit. The slow build of a relationship between a fucked-up ex-soldier and a high functioning sociopath. Fangirl catnip, basically.

You give me..., gen, by ariadnes_string , the obligatory feverish h/c clichè. Again, fangirl catnip. I'm off to re-reading it right now!

holmes, fic rec
