Endless surprises

Bear with me.  I'm going to write a bit about my favorite radio show.  No, I'm not going to burst with fangirl glee.  Just a little bullet list of how things went.

Yesterday:
- Discussion lingers on whether the youtube invites to Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake and Joseph Gordon-Levitt equate to blackmail.
- An e-mail is sent from a woman named Kelley from Portland Maine who asks if Eric Zane would like to take her mother to dinner.  Her mother needs a kidney transplant and Kelley hopes that this would bring awareness to the family's plight.
- Eric says 'no I would not like to, but I will go if you provide first class airfare to Portland Maine for me and my wife and a limo to the restaurant'.
- This starts a multi-segment discussion on organ donation, with donors calling in.
- A few people e-mail stating that they'd do it.  This is dismissed out of hand and is not discussed on the air.

Today:
- Kelley sent another email, stating that she subscribed to the podcast when she found out that they read her email.  She couldn't listen, you see, because she and her family were meeting the transplant team.  There's a history of kidney disease and other ailments in their family, making Kelley and her sister unsuitable donors.  She's still pressing forward with the screening process in the hope that she might be able to do it.  Her mother is on the list, but it will be a long wait.  The best hope is for a direct donor.  She includes a few facts about who can donate - pretty much anyone with a clean bill of health.  Blood type does not matter.
- Free Beer mentions the emails that he'd gotten from volunteers from yesterday that he admittedly had taken with a grain of salt.
- Eric tempers his position on the dinner date to coach airline tickets to Portland ME and a ride for him and his wife to the restaurant.
- Discussion continues on kidney transplants, and suddenly people are reiterating via email that they were SERIOUS when they wrote about donating yesterday.
- Kelly's blog is linked on the homepage.  The guys send Kelley's contact information to all emails indicating that they are volunteering.
- A woman from Nashville (I believe) called in and, after discussing why organ donation is important, states on the air that SHE WILL DONATE HER KIDNEY. I quietly weep in my cubicle.
- Suddenly there are scores of volunteers, all offering and asking for information on kidney donation in general.
- A man in PORTLAND MAINE writes in, stating HE WILL DONATE. He wants to get in contact with the family.
- Kelley writes a thank you on her blog with all of contact information for her and the transplant team.  You can find it here.

Who knew a casual convo on a radio show about the youtube invites to celebrities could turn into a lifesaving effort?  Kudos to the guy for following this thread over two days, and for helping Kelley's mother get a new lease on life.

Kelley promised she'd keep the show informed on what happens.  I'm looking forward to the day when her mom gets to go home with a brand new kidney.

what makes great radio is great people, that radio show
