There are some very nice rewards in this life that I lead. Travel is on the top of the list of my reasons for pursuing this career. So, far, we've done very well in traveling as much as we can inside and out of the countries that I've been posted to.
Earlier this week, I was in Rhodes, an island at the bottom of the chain of Greek islands and so close to Turkey that I could see it from my hotel window. We were in Rhodes to support a Congressional Delegation of Senators McCain, Lieberman and Collins. Being the Management Officer on the trip, I was behind the scenes for most of the visit and didn't spend much time at all with the Senators or their staff, just on arrival, breakfast time in the Hospitality room and on departure. Despite my reluctance, departure gained me a snapshot with all three Senators. I'll post it on FB tomorrow.
Rhodes is a great island and I can't wait to take Brian back. The hotel was very gracious in their support of us and made the entire trip go more smoothly than I could have imagined.
This pic is from me cannibalizing the breakfast spread after the delegation left for the morning. It would have gone into the trash otherwise, so I didn't feel so bad. I took advantage of the downtime to have a bite to eat and enjoy the calm before we had to get the luggage loaded onto the plane.
Between the visit in Corfu and now, I've learned to take the small moments and use them because supporting visits (of any kind, but especially off-site) mean little sleep and constant work. Possibly the best part of the trip was after wheels up, sitting next to the Control Officer with our legs dangling in the infinity pool.
