Before Cell Phones, Life Was Like This --

(from May 1996)

Our 1st morning we got out of Vena's fast. The woman seemed surprised we were leaving so soon -- odd for a place used to one-night stands.

We were lucky to have so little luggage as we walked the narrow streets in roseau. We found the bank, and were able to get EC$. Most of the workers in the bank were women. They wore uniforms -- bright blue skirts and jackets. A policewoman told us how to find a payphone. However, that phone was "card-only" -- no coins, and the AT&T card didn't work.

So, we walked ourselves around looking for some other phone so we could call to rent a car. A man popped out of a building when he saw us coming. Of course, he was also a guide. I asked if there was a phone inside. He said yes, we could use it for a dollar. I expressed shock but Ben said it was an EC$ -- 2 1/2 times one US$. And, there was a sign by the phone -- 1.50 EC. So, we used the phone and paid.
