death cab for cutie: christmas (baby please come home)

Dec 20, 2005 10:31

I wonder what this household will be doing for christmas...there are vague rumors that the mother will attempt another turkey-type dinner (a la thanksgiving), but who knows how far we are progressing with americana type things.
as I have no desire to deal with the loads of people pouring into the city through various mass transit alternatives, I'm home again with absolutely nothing to do - next time I should probably pack a book in case I end up with half a job and not much else for three weeks. hostessing at sarabeth's is very different and not very hard at all, especially since 80 percent of my job is basically just smiling at people and telling them it'll be a 1:30 wait with a straight face. it's good that I'm around, though, because I hear about covers as soon as servers do need them and because I love the staff for making me strangely happy. the food is still amazing (if not more, with the addition of pumpkin pie, butternut squash agnolotti, mushroom risotto...). it's good to be back.
I'm trying to remember particularly notable events of this past year for poignant, eloquent, end-of-year reflection, but all I remember from the beginning of the year (besides a very amusing start) is my laptop crashing and the ensuing hunt for an ms office cd, the hinman formal...and then my mind fast forwards to:

  • the short-lived job hunting frenzy in june (I still have to shred the 50 resumes I had copied and stapled)
  • seeing the get up kids rock the hell out on their final tour with dan and an audience of 14-year-olds
  • a long hazy summer of first-time waitressing, including a brief education in wine and tie-tying, a lot of broken spanish, visits from friends! and so much eating
  • sparks, avenue Q (my first broadway show!), and brunch at serendipity the next morning
  • the seafood salad at isabella's (and the strawberry butter)
  • a thoroughly liquored end-of-summer week, in which I finally got the tattoo I've been dreaming about/ doodling for the past two years, got red highlights anyway after pledging to do a grown-up brown, played tourist on the brooklyn bridge at sunset, and paid $8 for at least $40 worth of drinks in a night (thanks to our lovely and drunk german bartender)
  • the utter insanity of new student week as both social chair and peer adviser, nightly phone calls from fifteen freshmen demanding access to parties, and of course the birthday celebration two nights in a row
  • cheering on mike at the chicago marathon, and planning his "faster than the el" banner the night before
  • believing that it would be quite alright to work two jobs and simultaneously do schoolwork/ go to classes, and then thinking that I could work until mid-reading week
  • girls' night in
  • the infamous football game, beta 80s, and clarke's at 8am in the rain
  • giordano's large stuffed mushroom pizza for sunday brunch
  • partaking in the great american tradition of waking ludicrously early for black friday deals, and scoring my sexy external hard drive (don't hate)
  • dismal grades for fall quarter
  • a weekend job for holiday vacation, which has resulted in endless shopping with dwindling funds and hours of idle leisure (apparently qualifies as a vacation)

and 2006 thus far promises:

  • UNC trip in mid-january
  • hinman formal on february 17
  • dance marathon in march, and perhaps st. patrick's day in boston
  • who knows?

and as I say almost automatically now: thank you, have a great day and a happy holiday.
