Miss Fisher Season Two: Predictions

Apr 06, 2015 08:06

I finished season 1 last night, so now I am going to predict season two, a la Mark Watches. Please, no spoilers for season 2 in the comments, no matter how small (Even if you liked it or not!). I am a spoilerphobe! Also, assume spoilers for season 1 below.

My predictions (so I can mock myself later):
My predictions, though probably more like a wish list. )

Wait. There is a Mac and a Jack in this show?

Is that the only reason you are watching it?

It took me an embarrassingly long time to work out why Mac was significant. I am a sad fangirl.

Hahaha! Mrs. Robinson, I presume?! Or Ms. Stanley. I should have had faith they would deal with the ex-missus in a good way.

AND THE FAN DANCE. Jack is like, "Yup, she's dancing naked," and is like totally cool about it. (HUGH'S FACE OMG) I like how Jack has pretty much given up trying to make Phryne be anyone other than herself. Nothing fazes him. It's awesome.

And the complex treatment of the concept of prostitution. Acknowledging that prostitution can be seriously problematic and that women are seriously destroyed by the system. But also acknowledges that Dot's mother didn't have the best life either, that marriage with no hope of family planning and an inability to say no to sex with your husband isn't that much safer or healthier than prostitution. Just... so interestingly done.

I was unsurprised to notice that many of the people in the production of the show are women.

(Also, the dance instructor is totally getting counted as one lover for Phryne.)

Yeah, I love how well they treat (almost) all issues--and especially that it isn't (always) Phryne who is the voice for progress. The rest of the characters come from places of nuance, not just Phryne's anachronism, and I think it's awesome.

And yes, Jack discovering that Phryne will be Phryne and that he adores her just as she is is basically my favorite thing ever. Along with all the other things that remain my favorite, including the way they introduced Rosie Sanderson (Robinson) without any of the drama you would usually expect. It's just fantastic.

So many women working on the show! ALL THE BEST THINGS.

And yes, I also count the dance instructor! :)
