Fanfic squickination. (It's a word. I just made up.)

So, there's a lot of fic out there that bothers me. Poor grammar, bad spelling, improbable (even anatomically impossible) porn, absolutely terrible characterizations, etc, etc. These bug me, sure, but they don't really upset me. It's just par for course. And it's not like I pay for fanfic. It's a place for experimentation. A place to get better, if ( Read more... )

She Who Must Not Be Named warning for that link. That lady is a legend in Stargate fandom (and not in a good way). :)

Oh, I wandered into that one too. I needed serious brain bleach after that one! My reaction can be nicely summed up by that clip we've probably all seen of Nancy Kerrigan's reaction to having her kneecap whacked [here, if you haven't seen it, but don't rewatch if you haven't, because pain is never pretty]: "Why? Why???!!! WHY???!!!"

I really don't need to know about my fictional character's periods, their eliminatory needs, and their boils, pimples, and post-nasal drip. We all deal with such things, but adding it to fic doesn't add realism, it adds squick.

Besides, Jack was married. He should be able to handle the realities of the female body.

It all comes down to waaay T.M.I. about what the author thinks is sexy.

Awww, but don't you think her fic is complete genius? She used to get hundreds of "you are so awesome!!!" comments on her stuff back when I actually frequented ye olde mailing list.

It was enough to make any good writer bitter.

it just made me think about both a woman who would write that and the women who thought, hmm, yes, this is for me! this is what i want my relationship to be! WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? are my questions.

but people like what they like, i guess.

While I completely agree on everything you all are saying, it seemed like to me that she-who-shall-not-be-named is originally from a country where a women's lib movement hasn't hit particularly hard yet. You also have to keep in mind our perspective is somewhat ethnocentric. And that's a good thing ;)

Well, that's her get-out-of-squick-free card.

What's the excuse you give for all her adoring readers, many of whom were apparently from countries where women's lib happened?

Actually, i feel there's a worse one, where Sam was worried about losing Jack so he imprisoned her in a room so she could watch him fuck another woman and show her how much he cares that he would never do something like that again.

W. T. F?!?

That one is bad, but I still think the absolute worse was when Jack used the wooden chair leg, as a sex toy on Sam.

Although, to be fair, he did survive the thin, glass, tube being inserted into a part of his anatomy. The author claims she heard about that one from by a hooker, she happened to know.

I think I lead a sheltered life.
