I was holding out to get one more fic done in 2010, but that ship has sailed, so here's my roundup and writing goals for 2011!
The Fic
Sam/Jack (7)
Mimesis (Older Teens, Drama, Angst, Sam/Jack)
Jack tries to help Carter deal with her time spent with Fifth and the Replicators. 'New Order/Gemini' AU.
16,000 words
I Love It When A Plan Comes Together (PG, Fluff, Sam/Jack)
Dear Airline, I was marooned on an alien planet....
2200 words
Rusted Wheel (Mature, Angst, Action/Adventure, Hurt/Comfort, Sam/Jack)
Things were strained enough between them before they ended up prisoners on a desert planet. Only then there’s an unexpected side effect to the technology keeping them trapped. This is helplessness neither thought they would ever have to experience.
32,000 words
Reversal (NC-17, AU, Apocafic, Sam/Jack)
Nothing has been normal between them since Earth died. Sequel to 'Compliance'
3000 words
Compliance (NC-17, AU, Apocafic, pr0n, Sam/Jack)
Carter has always been good at following orders.
2800 words
Falling Back to Earth (Older teens, Drama, Action/Adventure, Angst, Team, Sam/Jack)
Jack gets the call from the SGC. He should have been cynical enough to know it was all too good to last. Sequel to 'Convergence' and 'Linger'. 'Children of the Gods' AU.
28,000 words
A Rush of Blood to the Head (Teen, Drama, Angst, Sam/Jack)
"You volunteering to come with me, Carter?" Sam and Jack deal (or don't) with the creation of mini!Jack.
3800 words
Other het (2)
who i am at the end of the day (SGU, Older Teens, Drama, Angst, Ginn/Greer)
Choice is a luxury Ginn has never tasted.
5000 words
Coming to Terms (PG, Drama, Kerry/Jack, Jack/Sam)
It wasn’t quite as merciless as it sounded in her head sometimes. Kerry POV.
1000 words
I was pretty depressed with how short this list was until I bothered to count up the words. With the chapters of Wreckage I posted, I am well over 100,000 words for the years and I can’t feel bad about that.
The Questions
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
At first glance way less, but I think I finished some long, experimental pieces that I have been thinking about for a long time. So that was nice. Plus, I finished one crazy AU fic verse off (Convergence), but inadvertently gave birth to two more (my miniverse and the pornverse).
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007?
Uh, Ginn/Greer. Or SGU fic at all. Lol. Who knew five seconds of some red-headed Lucian Alliance chick would light my brain on fire? I still have plans for her. Particularly in light of SGU’s cancellation.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
OMG, the smut. I learned that I can write it, but that I just don’t particularly like writing it. That and I had a lot of fun extrapolating stories for secondary characters, trying to imagine backgrounds and motivations for them. Like Kerry and Ginn.
My Best Story of the Year
Hmm. I really loved the world building and secondary characters of
Rusted Wheel, but I think I will have to go with
Mimesis as my best story of the year. It just all came together even better than I have hoped. Plus, I have always wanted to play with RepliCarter, especially when it comes to Sam/Jack.
Story Most Under Appreciated by the Universe in My Opinion
Not really sure I feels something was totally unappreciated this year necessarily. I was a bit sad, but in no way surprised that
who i am at the end of the day had such a small audience. SGU has small enough readership as it is without me writing completely speculative fic about a minor character with less than ten minutes of screen time. But I love that fic so damn much. Or maybe I just love Ginn. :)
Most Fun Story
I Love It When a Plan Comes Together. That was just such a fun fic. I wrote it in a day, I think, and it’s so joyful to remember that I am actually capable of doing that sometimes, writing a quick, silly, fluffy fic that didn’t require years of angsting and nitpicking to pull together. Plus, clueless Jack and predatory Sam always amuses me.
Most Sexy Story
Oh boy. This was the year of the smut. Pretty sure ‘
Compliance’ wins. Is this where I confess that I am still embarrassed to have posted it?
Most Difficult Story to Write
I was going to say my last story of the year, but I didn’t actually finish it yet, so I will have to think of something else. Nothing else was particularly hair-pulling hard, though the revisions and beta phase of
Falling Back To Earth was aggravating, but well worth it in the end, as most fic betaing experiences are. I suppose it’s time for another shout out to
aurora_novarum , beta extraordinaire, who never lets me take short cuts and always makes my stories better. Her eye for the big story and the themes and being able to pick up on subtle threads, man, so wonderful.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters
Definitely the Kerry Johnson and Ginn fics. Thanks to a few new LJers I’ve started following this year (mainly
igrockspock ,
kitausu , and
tosca1390 ) I spent a lot of time this year immersed in the Awesome Ladies ficathon and other female character focused comms (a lot of reboot Trek stuff). It really made me think more about the secondary female characters in my fandoms, and helped me imagine their own stories and backgrounds and agendas.
Biggest Disappointment
I save my disappointments for the fics I didn’t manage to finish. But that is only a matter of time, right? RIGHT? :)
Writing Goals from January 2010
1. Down Here Among the Wreckage
--Qualified Success?
Well, I finished Part Three. That’s a start. Only one part to go! (I think.)
2. Day of Indulgence Fic
Done!
Rusted WheelFinally finished this beast. Though I managed to piss off a lot of people, which actually surprised me. I have always had a sequel planned, but now I am waffling. I really think it stands alone, should stand alone, but I am also interested in Jack’s side of things.
3. Final Installment in ‘Convergence’ ‘verse- Done!
Falling Back to EarthAh, yes. I finally freed myself of this universe. (No, there are no more sequel snippets floating around on my hard drive. Really. I am so doomed.)
4. DC Series
--FAIL
Wow. I can’t be reading this right. Did I really not post a single entry in this series this year? Damn.
5. Original Novel Project -Progress is Something
Work was done, but not nearly enough. I just have such a mental block with original writing.
Another few from my WIP folder that could possibly explode this year (or finally get finished): --FAIL
-Vala ‘Unending’ Fic
-‘Lies You Feed Yourself’ spin-off fic
-Jack and Maybourne epic with bonus Sam/Jack
-Babyfic, Annerb style.
-Sequel Fic (I am still too superstitious to actually say which one I mean. Lol.)
None of these went anywhere.
But on to more positive things.
Writing Goals of 2011
1. Down Here Among the Wreckage
I plan on finishing part four this year. That should be the end of it, but this story has surprised me before, so I am braced for a part five to morph into life. We shall see.
2. DC Series
Definitely need to get a few more of these finished. I have the bones of at least seven more sketched out, two nearly done (if only they would stop getting longer and longer and more complex). I hope to get at minimum those two finished and posted.
3.
Rusted Wheel Sequel
This one is tentatively titled ‘Human Conditions’. I think the hang up for this story right now is that Rusted Wheel was so fundamentally a Sam story, her working through a trauma and various issues in her life and ultimately triumphing over them, that now I really need to nail down the journey Jack needs to go through to make this story fundamentally his and a fitting companion piece.
4.
Compliance Porn Series Part Three
I have one last installation in the porn series started and I would really like to finish it, it just keeps getting way emo and I’m having a hard time reining it back in. Plus, there is very little porn in it. There’s, like, all this talking! Also, I really need to stop explaining things.
5. Here On In
A sequel to my mini!otp verse started in ‘
A Rush of Blood to the Head’. This one is currently suffering plot fail, but a solution is bound to come to me eventually. Snarky mini!Sam and grumpy original!Jack in the same room is just too good to pass up.
6. Leia Organa fic
Because I have been reading some of the published Star Wars novels and I really kind of hate the direction they took Leia in. This is a ‘how I would have done it’ fic wherein Leia actually faces what it means to be a Jedi and doesn’t get kidnapped by Han to convince her she loves him. (OMG, whoever wrote The Courtship of Princess Leia needs to be flogged.) I’m mostly just frozen by the terror of delving into a fandom that requires me to have knowledge of six movies and a gazillion spin off novels. Am I going to be eviscerated if I have Leia drink a cup of tea instead of caf? *shudder*
Nebulous ideas that might explode into finished fic:
- Mimesis sequel (because I have a theory of what really happened and it’s blowing my mind)
-That SG-1/Leverage crossover fic that I refuse to write (and possibly already have a few pages written of)
-Ginn/Greer sequel wherein Rush is a sneaky bastard, Young loses it, and James calls Greer on his shit. Oh, and Ginn makes a new friend.
