I've been reading a really loooooong fic for the last week or so and I noticed that when originally posted, this 27 chapter novel of a fic had been posted serially. Meaning that the authors (there are two of them), routinely posted a chapter every Monday and Wednesday night until the fic was complete. I found this an interesting idea. Kind of like turning a fic into a TV show with predictable publishing. This idea sort of appeals to me for various reasons. While I have always published open-ended WIPs since I first began writing fanfic (
Egeria's Legacy,
String Theory, and such), I have sort of lost my taste for that sort of thing. I think the experience of writing long fics such as
The Raggedy Edge and
Gravity Always Wins in the End, but not posting until the entire beast is complete and edited and beta'd and so on, have taught me that I much prefer finishing the whole damn thing first. (Also, I am becoming more of a control freak and like to reserve the right to go back and change earlier parts.) Sure, I know, I still have a huge beast of a WIP out there right now, but I'm pretty sure it will be my last. As it is, I have two or three other insanely long fics in the process of being written that I think a year or two ago I would have started posting already with the vague understanding that of course I would finish it eventually! But this brings up the problem of posting a 20,000 word plus story in a way that is not obnoxious. (Think 20 chapters posted back to back. Eep!) But also, being a special snowflake and putting years into finishing a novel length fic, one would also like each chapter to be enjoyed on it's own. Or is that just annoying as hell and far too much like being all, "I MUST GET X REVIEWS OR I NEVER FINISH!" *FLOUNCE* ?
So, clearly we are in need of a poll.
