Etiquette Question

I have an etiquette question for you my wise and wonderful flist. It has to do with cross-posting. As I understand it x-posting means you publish a story or journal entry to several communities at one time. I've noticed when people do this they often apologize ("sorry for the x-posting") or list everywhere else they've x-posted. So, is it rude to x-post? Why do you need to list the other comms?

I'm curious because when I write a story, I usually publish it to something like seventeen different x-men slash communities and I can see how that'd be annoying if you are a member of all seventeen communities and on my flist to boot. But I keep thinking, on the one hand, there's my need for mass validation and then there's you, with your weird obsession with joining tons of slash comms, and your needs. Who's are more important? Mine, of course. I'm interested in y'all's opinion

X-Posting:

a) Always OK.
b) OK in moderation.
c) Never OK.
d) Who are you again and why are you asking me all these questions?
