Rebirth

“Well, well, well, what have we here?” Rango swallowed, looking up from the small plastic fish he was hugging so desperately. Rattlesnake Jake loomed over him, tongue flickering in and out rapidly. “You look like you're lost, brother.”

Rango looked down at the ground, unable to disagree. He'd never felt more lost in his life.

“What's the matter?” Jake asked mockingly, slithering around behind the chameleon. Rango couldn't stop a small shudder as he felt the coils brush against his back. “Don't tell me you're scared,” he hissed. Rango felt the snake's tongue whisper against the side of his face, then, without warning, he was dragged into a crushing embrace, the breath forced from his lungs. He scrabbled feebly at the scales dragging slowly along his clothes, but it was no good, he was getting dizzy, he needed to breathe!

Suddenly he was gasping for air, still surrounded by the rattlesnake's body. Jake glared down at him, spat, with a contemptuous flick of the tongue, “Pitiful.” His voice swelled to a roar. “Pitiful! And you thought you'd pretend you were stronger than old Jake? You ain't even worth a bullet!”

Rango looked up at the fearsome eyes, the fangs bared angrily, and all at once, he gave up. He slumped, stopped resisting, just gave in to death. Jake's voice was gravelly as the snake suddenly released him, shooting away. “Now I don't wanna see you again this side of the highway, you understand, fraud?”

Rango listened to the slither-clank of Jake's departure for a long time, lying face-down in the sand. Eventually, he got up and stumbled over to sit next to the headless Barbie that had once been one of his dearest friends. That was before he found real friends. Real friends he lied to. Real friends he let down. Real friends who couldn't believe in him.

Finally realizing the answer to the question he'd been asking his entire life, Rango stood, moving to the edge of the road. He stopped, breathing deeply as he took his hat off. Then, looking straight ahead, he set his foot down on the road.

Who am I?

The cars rushed past.

I'm nobody.

Rango the fraud died that night.

Rango the legend was born.
