I sympathise fully with a LOT of what you say and are suffering.
It's a bummer about The Gifting, but I do feel that self-publishing has tidied up its act quite a bit in the last few years. Plus you have the advantage of your experience with small epublishers to draw on now, as well. At least you've tried. Who's to know whether they'll be hammering on your door in later years BEGGING to publish your backlist?!! I'm a (maybe desperate) believer in a snowball effect (no sexual pun intended :)).
My work is dragging me down too, though I am training myself to accept I'll never be a 'literary' writer and therefore can't ever expect to hit it big enough to give up the day job. (clumsy sentence, sorry) I'm stuck between salivating for early retirement (which ain't gonna happen for said financial reasons) and hanging on until then by my fingernails because I don't know what kind of job I'd get if they chucked me now, at my advanced age :). Another bummer.
Hang on in there. Your writing is superb and your books much appreciated. And I've always admired you because you are so determined and proactive with your writing and submitting.
*useless hugs but meant well, especially after 2 beers*
PS and I'll be with you in the DSP xmas listings!! :)
