1. Your main fandom of the year:  I'm not heavily into fandoms right now...

2. Your favorite film this year:   I guess of the movies I actually saw at the theater this year, probably Super 8 and (belatedly seen instead of last year) The King's Speech. I've probably seen 75 movies on Netflix this year so I'd have to check my Netflix ( Read more... )

I ventured a toe into the Hunger Games fandom...and then ran away. They're kinda scary.

I only got close when CastingGate was going on and I was treated to the fringes of the mass hysteria that they were looking for a Caucasion for Katniss....then I backed away and haven't looked back.

So what race is she supposed to be in the books?

From what I've seen in the trailer they ended up casting a caucasian anyway, yes?

From the vitriol that was spewed at me? I was informed that because she was described as having olive skin and dark brown hair, she was supposedly Latino, possibly Asian.

Never mind the gray eyes, the fact that this was an entirely post-Apocalyptic America that was 200-300 years in the future (democracy was something referred to practiced in history books, by their ancestors...in the same tone we talk about colonial America.)

I was told by the person that they could provide "page numbers to back it all up" and this was just Hollywood "whitewashing" the book like they did with Avatar: The Last Airbender.

What was hysterical was watching these same people have apoplexy when they cast Lenny Kravitz as Cinna.

Ah! I thought I'd remembered that 'olive skin' but wasn't sure. Didn't remember the gray eyes though, shame on me!

(I *do* know that the girl pictured on the cover of the first book, in my room right now, is 100% caucasian. :-))

I *think* I remember something in the books about Rue and Thresh being black but I don't remember exactly where.

What was hysterical was watching these same people have apoplexy when they cast Lenny Kravitz as Cinna.

Oh? Typically the folk pushing so hard on the 'race bending' stuff are all one-way biased anyone-but-caucasian types, so I would have thought they would have applauded his selection.

But I don't really know much about this sort of thing, I've only seen a couple of snippets in passing ... which is why I was interested in your comment. Cheers.
