Help, oh wise and wonderful f-list

Mr. Annearchy and I had to spend $182 this weekend to replace a burned-out alternator bearing on our 2000 Saturn station wagon. I like this car but it's been requiring more, and more expensive, repairs the last couple of years, and we've decided to start looking around to replace it. We can't afford to buy a new car right now so we're hoping to find something 4-6 years old, sedan or station wagon, and we'd love something that is reasonably fuel-efficient. He hates SUVs and mini-vans so those are out (not to mention they usually suck re: gas mileage). Anyway -- any of y'all have any recommendations (preferably first or second-hand experience) for a good car that meets those criteria?
