1. According to celtic_fish the Perseid meteor shower happens tonight. Best viewing is after 2 a.m. US central, but you can probably see something after 11 p.m. Central depending on weather conditions. We live on top of a hill so I'm hoping I can see something before bedtime.

2. For the Jane Austen fans: The annual sheep fair in Overton, Hampshire, U.K. had a Jane Austen costume theme this year. My friend Frances' brother was there, in full regalia.

3. My friend Diane's son has an Op-ed piece in the New York Times (last week) about the Beijing Olympics. He has a unique perspective because he's lived in China for a long time and his raising his half-American/half-Italian children there. (Long story, really.)

4. As a David Cook fan, it's been very exciting for me to hear snippets of his single, TIME OF MY LIFE, being played at sporting events and, most recently, on NBC's coverage of the Olympics. Today I found out the story behind the writing of TIME OF MY LIFE. I used to think the magic rainbows song was a bit cheesy, but now I'm just sort of awed by how Regie came to write the song, and how the universe brought the song and the singer together. *wibbles*
