Humpday Dumpty

1. It was Farmer's Market Day in downtown State Capitalville. I got a lovely large bag of lettuce, 2 vine-ripened tomatoes (no pesticides), a ginormous chocolate chip cookie for DD, and a triple-chocolate brownie and a bag of freshly-popped popcorn for myself. I have, alas, already eaten the popcorn, because I simply couldn't wait until 2:30 -3:00 ( Read more... )

Shingles are a pain, and on the face, well, he does have the valtrex, so that might help/prevent this, but: if he starts to have nerve pain? make him go get a BIG painkiller prescription. Post-herpetic facial neuralgia (irritation of the nerve) was the most painful thing I have ever experienced, by FAR--if it's a 10, childbirth is a 5-6, no lie (tonsils out as an adult, which SUCKED, was relatively about an 7). I couldn't do much of anything but let my eyes drip tears for days (actually sobbing hurt more, so I just dripped), and needed percocet to dull it to tolerable enough to manage complex tasks like doing the dishes, and very much thought if this was going to be long term, I didn't need to be living any more.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. That's fairly terrifying. The fact that his left eye is involved has me pretty worried. How can he tell whether he's having nerve pain? He said Monday that he had a headache, and he says "it hurts" but not in a specific way. For obvious reasons he doesn't want to poke at his forehead, and neither do I.

Mine was the nerve that controls the entire side of the face (trigeminal nerve). It's hard to describe how it hurt, other than A LOT, but it didn't feel like muscle or skin pain.

The nerves that seem to be affected are in the diagram called 'same, with nerves' (except on the left side of his head). So the trigeminal nerve - is that the top one running along the cheekbone on this model?

Probably...

http://www.dalcross.com/staging/_images/trigeminal.JPG

is a drawing of it--trigeminal is the name because it splits into 3 (upper cheek, lower cheek, jaw), so basically, whole side of face on fire, whee. only not at all whee.

Okay... (not). Based on what seems to be swollen on his face, he has shingles in the frontal nerve.

Just. Great.
