I'll confess I had to go in reverse to refresh my memory in order to properly... "enjoy" this, but the re-read was well worth it for becoming submerged anew in the palpable pain, terror, desperation and visceral struggle that a physically and emotionally compromised and traumatized Ryan faces ( ... )

I feel bad having such long spells in between my posts. I know it is hurting the story. Unfortunately, there's just not a lot I can do about it. I am hoping to be just a tiny bit quicker with the next update.

I'll let you in on a little secret. The guard did do something. Sandy had left word with them to let him know if anyone saying they were Ryan Atwood or fitting Ryan's description showed up. So poor Ryan didn't even have to steal the alarm from Art. The guard had already called Sandy. (I'll work that into the story next chapter or possibly even the next)

I'm glad Ryan is coming off as feeling completely alone. That's what I was going for. And yes, I do think Art enjoys torturing him. I'm debating two possible endings to our villain. I want to make sure he gets what he deserves.

Thanks for the insightful comment and for reading.

That wasn't meant as a criticism. Trust me, I know too well about RL. We welcome any update. I was wondering more if I'd lost track of the threads I was trying to keep a fix on ( ... )

The possibilities for Art's ending are plentiful. I can't decide if I want him dead or not. It just seems fitting that he dies. However, I can't let him go too quickly.

The scumbag does play a significant role, however repulsive, doesn't he? At least he provides a counterbalance for Sandy and a stark contrast in terms of morality and integrity for both Ryan and Sandy. It would, of course, be all the more gratifying for Sandy and Ryan both to have some sort of shot at Art, although each needs something different. If Ryan at least had some sort of validation that could be verified at Art's expense, it could go a long way towards having something to build with if there's any hope for him to try to move forward and heal to some degree- eventually. If nothing else, under duress, Art could be forced into be a fountain of unpleasant, but valuable information. Then he could suffer the demise he deserves, maybe buried in the hot desert sand up to his ears, head exposed, drizzled in honey and sugar- and fire ants. Just a thought...

Fire ants are a wickedly good idea, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. Not to mention, this poor Ryan would probably feel guilty if he actually killed Art.

I've always been partial to the Apache ant eating method of buffet torture, which should be rather unsettling. Any poor!Ryan would feel horribly guilty if he were responsible for anyone's death, no matter how despicable and repugnant the life form. He's either wired, conditioned, or trained in a number of ways to twist matters as readily as a Yo-Yo! string or Slinky in a hurricane so he ends up with the burden of guilt and blame.

Wishing you and yours the best for 2009.
