I cannot be the only person who suffers from this.

Because without fail, the moment they take that deep breath and hold it, I do the same thing and don't breath again until they do. With editing tricks a character holding their breath for just a few seconds can stretch out to several minutes real time. I don't even realize I'm doing it until my lungs start to burn.
Even when I realize what I'm doing and consciously force myself to breath normally, if the character continues holding their breath I start to panic that I'm going to suffocate/drown/whatever. Then I start holding my breath again.
Then I end up missing whatever is happening in the story because I'm so distracted trying to keep myself breathing normally."
Matt: I really need to start archiving your craziest posts. They'll make for a fascinating book / study after you're smothered by your cat.
